I'm probably going to get killed for this -- and I don't consider myself overly PC but I think we throw the following words around too easily: r****d r****ded "Normal" There are alot of people struggling to make it through with whatever mental/physical abilities they have and to so easily dismiss them with a label is sad. Anyone agree?
I came to this realization when I found one of my friend's (an actual professor) children is mentally disabled. Even though I, and most people who use it, don't mean insult to the actual people that have it, I no longer say it anymore. Unfortunately it took something like that to make me realize it's not something to be taken lightly.
I was with you until you redundantly repeated a duplication again of the last part once more. Seriously, though, WHEN can we use these terms now? Only when we found someone who is really "mentally" r****ded? Also on their way out: FAT (use obese or weight-challenged, or "cholesterolful") UGLY (I have no other word for this one) DALLAS MAVERICK (that's a toughie... it's the worst insult EVER, as stated by Merriam Webster) "Man, you're as dumb as a Dallas Maverick."
Well, to be PC all the time nowadays is tough... what about Ghey...I saw it all that time like, "Dirk is super ghey"...is that offensive...
Personally I think the terms "r****d" and "r****ded" have become so related to deragatory meanings (like ******) that they are never appropriate. There are other less hurtfull words you could use if you most describe someones condition.
Do you think you'd feel different if you had a child/sibling who had a disability? What if you heard them being referred to as a "r****d" or "r****ded". What if they heard others talking about them like that -- like they were less than human? Would you feel different then?
i don't really have a problem with the word "r****ded". i think it just sounds a little harsher than calling someone stupid but no one seems to have a problem with stupid. i like to jokingly call people daft and see if they ask what that means. yea, exactly.
I've got an aunt that's r****ded and I don't think it's a bad term to use. And as far as somebody saying that in front of them, how is that any different from any other word with a bad connotation, like fat or dumb or ugly? Should we just remove any "negative" words from the dictionary and start calling fat people unskinny, and really fat people double plus unskinny? Or dumb people unsmart? I wouldn't call people any of those things to their face (or within earshot), but not because it's non PC but because it's rude.
yeah i agree i used to use that word when i was younger and now i regret it I used to use the n word with friends. We all used it like what's up n*. I am glad I grew up and realized how dumb it was to use it. Ghey is hard for me not to say. I find myself the only person at work defending homosexuals and then I use the word ghey all the time with emails with my friends to make fun of them. sigh
