The various MLK party threads got me to thinking (and hopefully, I thought, a thread will increase understanding instead of degrading to poop-slinging)... What are some stereotypes that you find offensive while others may not find offensive? I'll start with a couple: - Asian ladies are exotic in bed and are subservient and sex hungry - All Asian dudes know martial arts - All Asians like rice rockets / import cars - Asians guys tend to be nerds or gangsters Top of my head.. hopefully the more stereotypes are posted, the more we know if we are way too sensitive or if we're not sensitive enough.
As indicated by this type of stereotypical response. I'm offended that most people (of any skin tone) seem to think all racism is generated by anglo people from the US. I'm offended by the broad brush strokes placed on any people group. I offend myself (and most people could admit the same), yet it may be more offensive that no one else seems to look inward as much... but perhaps they do... it is just not enough to suit me. And, no offense, but at the same time, I can actually be offended by some people's offense to things where no offense was intended. But hey, I'm human... just like you. I offend easily, if I'm honest about it.
In this or any other thread I haven't seen anyone state that all racism comes from anglos in the U.S. However since most of the board lives in the U.S. and there is certainly a lot of racism alive and well in the U.S., and the main powergroup here is in fact from anglos. IT seems logical that most of the topics concerning race would be about race in the U.S. from anglos.
Pastors don't love homosexuals Pastors against abortion could care less about the mothers Pastors try to impose their beliefs on others Pastors look down on 'sinners' Pastors just care about how many people give money Am I Pastor 'sensitive'???
I don't like "Every slightly dark guy with a beard is Muslim and possibly terrorist" I don't really care about "People in the Middle East live in tents and ride camels."
Southerners are racists. Southerners are provincial. Texans still like Bush (even if it may stastically be the majority). Texans are anti-intellectual. French don't like Americans. French are sexually uninhibited. French can't fight. Whites fear young black men.
I can't stand the stereotype that Texans have a superiority complex. It's not a complex, we are better than everyone else.
Other than cruelty to children or animals, who can't defend themselves, nothing offends me. To make an open, democratic society work, people need to have thick skins.
