This will be a hot topic all year. If we are going to realize the contender label we need the OL to show up and show out every week. Game 1 was a mixed bag in pass pro, but these guys just tossed around one of the better DL in the run game which I would not have predicted. Great tone to set and now they can start to focus on cleaning up the dropbacks. Shout out to Kenyon Green. Buddy you are making me eat crow and Im here for it. The Texans have invested heavily in the o line but that hasn't been as obvious as it should have been until now due to injuries.
This is what I meant last year when I said the team would be very good if the OL stayed healthy. It didn't but thanks to great coaching and a weaker schedule they had a very good season. This year the OL is healthy and ready to kick some butt. They're only going to get better as the season goes along and they play together more. Developing continuity is the key. Plus they have better depth this year as well. Put this altogether with Mixon/Diggs and a very underrated Stover, the future is brighter than it's ever been as a Texans fan. I'm also looking for the secondary to be much improved as the season goes along.
I didn't notice in game but I saw a quote after (by Demeco, I think?) praising Stover for some of his run blocking. It's easy to forget the FBs and TEs can have just as big an impact on the run game. I like Dalton Shultz but I don't think run blocking is one of his strengths.
Texans had been trying to build an offensive line for the better part of their history and besides 2013 had usually come up short. They’ve invested heavily in the draft and free agency, but it was the same old swan song of inferiority. However, Every time I looked at the Cowboys, they had their OL full of pro bowlers; yet the Texans full of potential but no cigar. The Texans may have finally done it, and for more than just one year. They may have solidified the piece that let’s their Extremely talented Quarterback dice up opposing defenses. Green, Scruggs seem to bring that nastiness that wears out opposing defenders…. It’s one game, but the interior of the line looks sweet.
I swear to God the next time Tunsil jumps Im sacrificing a remote. Its gotten to be a bane on my fandom. Overall the unit to my eye was underwhelming last night. Pass pro a little bit better (but not much from game 1). Run game scrapped after Joe went down. They had their hands full with the Chicago front 7 which is very good. Will be curious to see the grades. Plenty of room for improvement.
The two false starts on Tunsil didn't hurt a thing. They got a first down after one of them and Fairbarin made the FG after the other one. The Bears front 7 was better than the Texans ol last night. The Bears defense is very impressive.
The guy is a false start machine. The one in the 4th quarter of the playoffs stung last year. A good front 7 shouldnt make an All Pro worthy LT ancy. Laremy led the NFL in false starts a couple of years ago and was one of the leaders last season. Hard for me to ignore it.
There is some connection between his false starts and his Pass Protection skills. It's getting the jump on positioning. He wouldn't be as effective if he was a step slow. This is not an excuse to false start, but perhaps a reason he has such a quick trigger.
Don't know if you were around then but remember JJ's encroachment penalties, many at the worst times possible. Stuff happens.
I think Juice Scruggs was sorely missed in the game against the Bears. The OL did not look as dominant without him. The run game was obviously not nearly as efficient. I am very intrigued if the return of Scruggs will open up the run game again, or was it that the Colts were just that bad.
Yep... and remember all the offensive holding that OL got away with against JJ... he could have had 30+ sack seasons
