I am concern about all the hooplay being made about C-Webb and courting him this summer. It doesn't seem that he would really fit in the current Rocket's offense and would only seem to destroy the current chemistry. The problem with the Rockets is they always think that by adding a suprstar would equal instant championship, i.e Charles Barkley and Scottie Pippen. One would only have to look at Portland to know that too much is not always a good thing. First and foremost, our weakest link this summer will be at the 3,4, and 5 spots. Walt Williams just isn't cutting it at the 3, and we really can't compete with bigger west coast teams with Anderson there either. The Rockets should definately look at trying to get Rashard Lewis, but good luck with trying to pry him loose from the Sonics. Another viable option is Patterson, who will be a free agent this summer. Though his outside shooting is suspect, he will provide fire, gut, and rebounding, which is sorely needed with Mo Taylor around. Another possibility is Croshere. He is stuck on the bench in Indiana, and Houston tried to sign him last summer. A possible trade for him would make sense since he would provide outside shooting, rebounding, and grit. Now for the 4 spot. Mo Taylor lacks alot of things, but he is definately available and probably will come rather cheap. I think that the Rockets can do well with trying to snatch either of the Davises this summer. Antonio is available and maybe the Trailblazers would be willing to give up Dale. I am sure he hasn't been happy on the bench in Portland. Also, a viable option is to trade Kelvin Cato for Horace Grant. The Rockets can get rid of his contract and get someone with veteran and champion leadership to help the young Rockets. Plus, the Rockets could afford to keep Mo Taylor and get Horace Grant. The Lakers would probably like the idea of a backup center to Shaq. The Rockets should also court Joe Smith. And now the 5 spot, possibly the hardest spot to fill. Personally, I have been a fan of Mike Doleac. He is a consummate professional and would fit perfectly in the Rocket's offense. He can shoot the outside jumper and spread the floor for the Rocket's guards. But no one will replace Hakeem. All of this essentially will do one thing, allow the Rockets to keep Hakeem and add depth to the Rocket's lineup. Let's not make the same mistake over and over again. Truc And why would C-Webb want to leave the Kings when the team is of playoff caliber and possibly championship contenders.
lytruc has made a very interesting observation trading Cato for Horace Grant. Is Grant a free agent next year?.If so the Lakers could get a backup center and we could use Horace for one year.If Hakeem decides to join the lakers next year, then we won't be able to get Cato off to the Lakers.Minnesota has lost 4 draft picks and needs size, the chances of them agreeing to take Cato for whatever we can get our hands on are slim, but if they are desperate they just might agree to take Cato,as getting Smith back won't solve their front court problems. ------------------
Horace Grant is in the last year of his contract. And he's not playing terribly well. ------------------ Founder and President of the Houston Homers Club(HHC) - Are you a homer? Join now! The Rockets will be NBA champions. Believe.
I'd rather have Will Perdue than Horace Grant. We need a 3 and a 5. I like the idea of going after Patterson. I don't see any good 5's out there that we could sign. I know Marc Jackson's available, but from what Swopa says, Jackson doesn't seem like the type of C we need. We need a mean SOB for our center. A guy that might not necessarily have a great shot or great ability, but makes up for all of that with heart. I have no clue who that is, but I have faith in Rudy and CD in finding this guy. Maybe Lafrentz? (I know Lafrentz doesn't exactly fit what I'm talking about, but I think he would fit nicely with this team, better than Jackson) For now I say resign Dream and Taylor. I think the guy we're gonna lose over the offseason is Anderson. There's no way he can play the 3 against the bigger teams in the league, and there's also no way I could see him replacing Cat at the 2 and moving Cat back to the bench. If we do resign Shandon, I hope maybe he'll accept a 6th man role which I doubt. That's why I think he's gone this offseason. SF's I hope the Rockets go after are Patterson and Eddie Robinson out of Charlotte. I could see us getting Robinson since he's stuck behind Mashburn. From what I've seen, Robinson plays pretty good D and he's young too. I've given up on the prospect of getting Webber. Mo Taylor is still a decent PF, and we should just resign him. He's still young and has skills. These draft picks we'll have could be packaged up for a trade and if we have 3 picks I'm almost positive a trade will go down b/c of the deepness of the draft. I just hope whatever trade goes down involves shipping off Cato The one player on this team that needs to go away is Cato. If you go through the players on our team, you can't say "that's a bad clubhouse guy" except for Cato. I know when I see him walk around with no direction on the court and get outrebounded by Matt Bullard I get mad. How pissed do you think his teammates get when they see him play like that on the court? If he just dissapeared, we'd probably have one of the tightest teams in the NBA. I don't mind keeping Walt. He's been pretty bad for us for the most part, but at least it seems like he gets along with everybody. Anyway this is probably the 4th time, I've talked about what we need and I never get any responses so I better go back to writing my freaking philosophy paper! ------------------ [This message has been edited by Band Geek Mobster (edited April 02, 2001).] [This message has been edited by Band Geek Mobster (edited April 02, 2001).]
miricles happen,...in the case of new york...miricles and minipulatitions go hand in hand i think. we can't complain, we were handed scottie pippen for roy rodgers and a pick, but then again pippen wasn't making jordan money either, hence why he wanted out in the first place. chris is making significant money even in sac-town and significant exchanges will have to be made to satisfy the CBA. new york has options, just not a lot of cap room, but this doesn't mean their out of the dealings either. sign and trade, 3/4 teams trade all are possible to get CWebb to new york if that in fact is where he'd rather be and i would not be surprised if he (CWebb) uses us to get there. with that said, we have just as much a shot at him as anyone and if he will agree to come here by him own volition,...i will agree to help him pack, load and carry his bags from sac-town to houston, but only if he wants to come here. if not, we definatly ought to resign mo, let shandon go, trade cato and some picks for another project center and resign Olajuwon and draft as many three's as possible. oh yeah, and resign colsen and moochie ------------------ new century, just like the old century...2001 WNBA CHAMPIONS HOUSTON COMETS!!! SWOOPES/THOMPSON/ARCAIN the big three are still intact!!!
My goodness, what has this BBS come to? Are we all drunk? All this talk of Horace Grant, Will Perdue, and hooplay? What the hell is hooplay? Stop the madness..... ------------------ There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
If we can land Webber and maybe trade our 3 picks to move up in the draft and take Griffin or Battier then that would be a perfect offseason. ------------------ President of the Steve Francis, Jamal Crawford,Larry Hughes, and Charles Woodson fan club.
What do ya'll (yes, it's a word) think about trying to acquire Fizer, one because he's a HELLUVA prospect and has shown flashes of brilliance this year, and also as a fall-back option should the Webber scenario not work out? I still say draft a SF or SF\PF. The Rocks are at least 2 good to solid Fs away from turning the corner. ------------------
Here are the players I think we’ll take a look at this off season. I don’t know why I bothered to include the players in the draft. I’ve become accustomed to going WHO? on draft night. Centers Marc Jackson—The truth Ruth!! Some say he’s too small at 6-10 (looks 6-8 1/2) but I watched him play before he got hurt. He has got some killer offensive moves at times. I think we should go after him. He’ll come relatively cheap and he has paid his dues so I don’t think commitment will be a problem. Raef Lafrentz—Range out to the three point line, will block some shots and bang inside. I think the bust up with Issel was more of a personality clash than a talent thing. Antonio Davis—Rebounding machine, has good hustle and will punish in the post. Is getting up there in age but can still run with our track stars. How can you bet against a guy who dunked in a 12 foot rim? Would have been my top choice but is said to be looking for the max. I don’t think he’s worth it. Might go to Orlando in a wink-wink deal. Dale Davis—Can still be a double digit rebounder and likes to smack people around. I wonder who Portland will want for him? Watch out at the free throw line. Brad Miller—Rudy was high on this guy before. I wonder if he still is? Has more hustle than talent but when your dying of thirst you can’t be picky about the water. Maybe we throw him a bone with our leftovers Draft Eddie Curry—290 my @ss I think this guy is closer to 310. Could be the next Shaq or the next Oliver Miller. I say put him back in the oven he’s not done yet. Tyson Chandler-Is this the year we go for a high schooler? I hope not. Is 7-1 but doesn’t like contact. From what I’ve read he has a descent midrange shot but doesn’t have Garnett or Miles quickness. Chris Marcus—Shot blocker and rebounder, but his offense is way off Power Forward Chris Webber-nuff said Tyrone Hill—the reigning “UGLIEST MAN IN THE NBA” champion but lets not forget what he did against us in that first Philly game. If he comes cheap we can play him at the 4 and 5 and try not to look directly at him. Jerome Williams—Will be more sought after as a free agent than people think. Maybe we could send some package involving Los for him. Small Forward Michael Finley—Unless we have video tape of this guy doing CRACK in a hotel room with a hooker we have no chance! But we can all wish! Shareef Abdur-Raheem—I know many will disagree but I’m not that impressed. Not saying he isn’t a good player. I just don’t think he’s the best fit for our system especially at the risk of exhausting cap space. Ruben Patterson—H-U-S-T-L-E-R. Is all over the place defensively and on the boards. Not much of a three point threat but is one of those players who will get his. Eddie Robinson—Long and athletic is always good at the three. If we can pry him away from Charlotte I think he would be a good addition, especially if Anderson leaves Bruce Bowen— My sleeper. Is a defensive machine and can hit the occasional three. I don’t think the Heat let him get away though! Draft Shane Battier—He’ll be gone by the time we draft but if we somehow move up it’s a no brainer. There are very few players who you know will find a way to contribute EVERY NIGHT! Richard Jefferson—Like Anderson but an inch taller and more physical. He is a sportcenter highlight waiting to happen will dunk on anyone and has three point range. If he comes out we take him Kareem Rush—Only 6-6 but long. Can go for 50 on any given night Terrence Morris—Maybe Steve can make him play like he did two years ago. If he can we’re in business. I say pass, too much of a risk. Rodney White—The best player no one has heard of. Played PF but is 6-8 can shoot the three and has handles. Led all NCAA freshman in scoring. Jason Kapono—not a good defender but is a gunslinger who has the skillz to keep Langhi on the bench. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Glyde22 (edited April 02, 2001).] [This message has been edited by Glyde22 (edited April 02, 2001).] [This message has been edited by Glyde22 (edited April 02, 2001).]
Glyde, why no mention of Loren Woods. I don't watch much college ball, but he looked pretty good against M State. ------------------ "We messed with the Bull, and we got the horns." -- Larry Brown "quote" from AirBullard.com
What chemistry are you referring to?!!! The chemistry that may not even land the Rockets a playoff spot?!!! One should not consider that valuable chemistry. Granted Steve and Cat play well together. They're both guards. I don't see how throwing an awesome big man into the mix would hurt any so-called chemistry. I'm not sure about Croshere given that he visited and seriously considered coming to Houston last summer. And didn't he end up signing a contract with Indiana????? ------------------ "...just because a clever person can complicate the discussion about the truth doesn't necessarily mean he or she is making any progress in finding it."
I must question the validity of your post after reading this. The Rockets even considering signing these guys would be criminal! ------------------ "...just because a clever person can complicate the discussion about the truth doesn't necessarily mean he or she is making any progress in finding it."
Woods has been given the dreaded soft label which I don't think is entirely accurate. I don't see him being on the board when we pick and I don't see us trying to move down to get him. I think he is better than Haywood who many rank as the top senior but when your college coach questions your dedication look out. But anything can happen. ------------------
Glyde22 - I agree with a lot of your comments but I feel if we do win the lottery we should draft Eddie Curry or Tyson Chandler. I saw Curry in the McDonalds game and he looked awesome. Also the ugliest player in the NBA is definately Popeye Jones. He looks amazingly like Sloth from the Goonies [This message has been edited by The Real Shady (edited April 02, 2001).]
I think the temptation to draft one of these high schoolers is there. Given the choice I would definitely take Curry over Chandler. But I have a feeling that Krause will solve that problem for us. Keep in mind that any high schooler we draft probably won't be ready to contribute immediately. That could be a problem on team trying to make the playoffs. The last thing we need is more dead weight (see Cato and Collier) As far as Popeye goes I think he's running a close second, Hill is High-Octane Ugly!!!! ------------------
I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU PEOPLE THOUGHT I WAS SERIOUS ABOUT WILL PERDUE! I said "I'd rather have Will Perdue than Horace Grant." Translation "I'd rather cut off my right arm then see Horace Grant on this team" I'm in amazement that you people thought I was serious. ------------------
Egads. Will Purdue? Horace Grant? These are desperate times in Lotteryville on I-10. Who in their right mind would trade a young player good enough to pass Rocket brass muster and make the roster for either of those relics? By the way, "hooplay" is an ISO without all the hoopla. Very straightforward really. ------------------ Time is a great teacher-- only problem is it kills all its pupils. PowerbizOnline.com
I like Woods out of Arizona. Anyone else think that Edgerson out of Arizona would be a great 2nd round pick? I think he could develop. Maybe another Anthony Mason. Battier would be a great fit to our team. We should trade up to get him. A hardworking 4 and then we wouldnt have to worry about Webber. Keep MO as the starter and work in Battier. TMO-Terrence Morris would be a good pick also. I really like Richard Jefferson too. Bye Bye Shandon and Cato. I STILL BELIEVE!!! ------------------ Go Rockets!!! SS
