Of all things to make child-proof, why cigarette lighters?

Since July 94 it has been mandatory for all cigarette lighters to be child-proof.

Of all the things that are dangerous for children, why focus on cigarette lighters?

My gas stove has no child-proofing whatsoever. A child just has to apply slight pressure to any of four dials, and a large blue flame will emerge. The flame from a gas stove seems much more dangerous than that of a ligher. Why isn't it mandatory for stoves to be child-proof?

knives are not child-proof, and seems at least as dangerous as a cigarette lighter. Why not mandate child-proof knives?

There's no lobby protecting the protecting the rights of smokers, and there are tons of "What about the children?" whiners and tons of "Second-hand smoke is killing me" whiners, so I can see how something like this happened.

I still can't believe that cigarette lighters, out of all the dangerous things in the house, were singled out.

Why not ban paperclips? Its really easy to unbend a paperclip and stick it into an electric socket and shock the **** out of yourself.

Man I'm surprised your house hasn't burned to the ground yet! [IMG]

Yeah, all those doctors whining about second hand smoke making people sick and killing them. If somebody wants to kill themselves smoking, be my guest, but you're not bringing me down with you! I'm assuming your a smoker, what's the big deal with a child-proof lighter?

What happens in a case like this is that a few kids burn themselves with lighters so a safety advocacy group focuses on getting Legislation passed to add a safety feature to the product.

If there had been a rash of kids burning themselves with gas stoves, you'd likely see legislation on that, too (or, it could be that there is a group trying to get such safety devices imposed but haven't been successful yet).

When kids start lighting the curtains on fire with a gas stove, you'll have a valid complaint. It isn't so much that a lighter makes fire; it's that it makes fire and is portable. A stove is stationary and built in such a way as to not present the hazard of burning the house down. A lighter can start fires anywhere. And, as for knives and such, again, it isn't the danger of minor injuries that provoke child-safeties, it is the danger of death with is much higher in a burning building then in walking around with a knife.

I can tell there are no pyromanics on this board. When we were kids and we had a lighter, we lit everything on fire. Its not protecting the kids from the lighter, its protecting the apartments and trailers.

Can you really see some kid dragging a gas stove out back or in his room trying to light a piece of paper on fire? (Then again, we'd spend an hour rubbing sticks together or a magnafying glass trying to start one)

    What about gas heaters?

If you turn the knob, but don't properly light it, you will die from gas inhalation or an explosion.

I have a hard enough time just figuring out how to get the pilot light lit in the first place. If a kid can do it, there's nothing I can do about it! [IMG]

Zippo lighters are NOT child-proof, however.

You think Zippo's got a big lobbying organization in DC?

I hear ya jamcracker. Child proof lighters annoy the **** out of me. However, I can understand the need for them. I was a pyromaniac as a kid too.

What I want to know is why do they all have to be child proof? Why they can't just make some for those who want/need them and regular ones for those of us who never have kids around is beyond me. grrr

I think that Jammy is just mad because he couldn't figure out how to get the child-lock off.

Actually I just had a buddy bring me a refilable non childproof back from London a few days ago.

I only buy Bics. I can de-child-proof them with my car key in 30 seconds flat.

I refuse to use a lighter with an active child-proof mechanism. I'm always "fixing" my friends' lighters.

You can see its a subject near and dear to me.

You guys need to buy cheaper mouthwash.

I've got Walgreen's brand "Antiseptic mouth rinse". It has instructions on the lid for defeating the child proofing, but I never even noticed. It just unscrews for me, without having the press the little tabs or whatnot.

Go Walgreens! Keep making ineffectual child-proof mechanismms!

I have a non child-proof bic lighter right now and I always get them. If it is a law not to make em that way, then I guess the law gets broken. Target and Walmart sell them in 6 packs.
I was also Mr. Pyro as a young un.
    Fires are cool, huh huh.

Not a gas furnance in the attic, just the heater up against a wall. They have no pilot. Just a knob to turn, like an oven

    "...non child-proof bic lighter..."

Impossible. non child-proof lighters are no longer manufactured for sale in the US. For a while, you could find old ones...

The new Bic child-proof is fairly innocuous, just a metal strip over the flint wheel. It really never gets in the way if you use moderate pressure, but I always remove em anyway. It really is easier to flic your bic after you remove that lil child-proof strip.
