NBA Scout: Oden was faking it

On most days, I wouldn't give a story like this any run, but outside allegations of an NBA referee fixing games, not a whole lot is going on, so here goes. Utah Jazz beat writer Steve Luhm writes in his blog that an NBA scout told him that the only reason Greg Oden had his tonsils taken out when he did is because the Blazers didn't want him to lose confidence:

... Portland management announced that Oden needed surgery to remove his tonsils, ending his first summer league. I heard, however, that the Trail Blazers knew about Oden's trouble with his tonsils all along. The original plan was to have them removed sometime prior to the start of training camp.
Instead, the Blazers suddenly scheduled the summer league-ending surgery because Oden was playing so poorly and they did not want him to lose confidence.
Personally, I still think Oden will be a superstar in the NBA. And I don't know if this version of tonsil-gate is true. But it's food for thought.

lets at least give the guys a season to play and then gauge their status at that point.

Well if an "NBA scout" told him, it must be true.

I agree and am doubtful Oden will ever be a dominant player in the NBA. But I give no credibility to this report.

I never saw anything in Oden in college to see him being a "superstar" in the NBA there's just something about him he does kinda remind me of Kwame Brown more than anyone

    BUST of this draft

So after two bad summer league games, he's a bust ? Let's judge him on a full season. I don't see any reason why he won't become a very good player.

Even a full season may not be enough. He just had one year of college and many big men have taken some years to develop. But I do suppose if he isn't looking like he'll be a star by the end of the season then he'll probably never be a superstar. Most of your true superstar centers dominated from their first year on. Yao may be the only exception I can think of, but he at last proved he was going to be a star by the time his first season was over.

But Hakeem, Shaq, Wilt, Kareem, Bill Russell, Moses Malone and even second tier guys like Patrick Ewing and David Robinson all were pretty dominant their rookie campaign.

for what it's worth, i met odens aau coach when i attended the nba draft in nyc. he said plain and simple, "greg is not ready. he will have his time, it's just not right now."

guess he knew what he was talking about. he has all the tools, but he will take time to develop.

Blazers made a mistake. Should have put Aldridge at C and Durant at F. They could trade Martell Webster. With Aldridge, Durant and Roy, that's a scary future. If Travis Outlaw decides to mature, whoa boy.

And if they had drafted Durant instead, you can add Zach Randolph to that lineup. Bad apple aside, he's an inside force.

I personally believe Oden will be a star. But not anytime soon. He's young. Even though he doesnt look it, lol. It always takes longer for a big man to blossom and develop. Look at Yao. Therefore, after two summer league games, Im not ready to label him Sam Bowie. I do think Durant will get Rookie of the Year, but Oden will have a better overall CAREER. Just my two cents...

Let's think about this: If the Blazers had drafted Durant and not traded away Randolph, then we might not have ended up with Steve Francis...
