Am I crazy or is the positioning of the players around the paint in a free throw lineup different in college vs. the NBA? It appears that in college, the two guys closest to the basket leave the first position open, while in the NBA this space is occupied. So the players are lined up farther away from the basket, but closer to the shooter while the free throw is happening in college. Does anyone know why it's done this way? How long has this been going on?

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

That picture appears a little old for the NBA so it might've changed. But I know for HS basketball this year the UIL changed the rule so that nobody could occupy that bottom position.

Could be the same in college as well.

I think college changed last year. Not sure of why.

Thanks for starting this thread. I noticed this too and was curious.

This is the first year I saw them doing in college.

I'm pretty sure it was like that prior to this year also. Didn't they move the 3 point line out this year? The top image has the closer 3 point line.

It's been like that for awhile. I didn't know it was a rule, just figured opponents in college preferred to occupy the 2nd space and they lined up from there.
