Blunt Statement on Obama Campaign’s Abusive Use of Missouri Law Enforcement JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Matt Blunt today issued the following statement on news reports that have exposed plans by U.S. Senator Barack Obama to use Missouri law enforcement to threaten and intimidate his critics. “St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch, St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer, and Obama and the leader of his Missouri campaign Senator Claire McCaskill have attached the stench of police state tactics to the Obama-Biden campaign. “What Senator Obama and his helpers are doing is scandalous beyond words, the party that claims to be the party of Thomas Jefferson is abusing the justice system and offices of public trust to silence political criticism with threats of prosecution and criminal punishment. “This abuse of the law for intimidation insults the most sacred principles and ideals of Jefferson. I can think of nothing more offensive to Jefferson’s thinking than using the power of the state to deprive Americans of their civil rights. The only conceivable purpose of Messrs. McCulloch, Obama and the others is to frighten people away from expressing themselves, to chill free and open debate, to suppress support and donations to conservative organizations targeted by this anti-civil rights, to strangle criticism of Mr. Obama, to suppress ads about his support of higher taxes, and to choke out criticism on television, radio, the Internet, blogs, e-mail and daily conversation about the election. “Barack Obama needs to grow up. Leftist blogs and others in the press constantly say false things about me and my family. Usually, we ignore false and scurrilous accusations because the purveyors have no credibility. When necessary, we refute them. Enlisting Missouri law enforcement to intimidate people and kill free debate is reminiscent of the Sedition Acts - not a free society.”[/rquoter]
Are you suggesting that people should not be prosecuted for conducting campaign activities in violation of the law? I know you're a fan of the "anything goes" politics as far as smears and lies go, but you're also a fan of illegal behavior?
So the point is that Republicans want to lie about Obama but they can't, so they run a Youtube ad only the ACLU and Republican partisans would love? How about making political commercials ABOUT THE TRUTH??? Is it that hard for Missouri Republicans?
I'm not sure what your point is, but I think may have missed a question I had for you. Do you believe that some soldiers fighting under the orders of their commander in chief do die in vain?
So you believe libel and/or slander should be legal? It seems to be your problem shouldn't be with Obama, but with the people who designed the laws. Or do you believe that people should only follow laws they think are right?
you republicans need to tell me why i should vote for john mccain/potentially sara palin (god help us all if she takes over)...... rather than why not to vote for obama...
Because we're in a really bad economy and McCain believes in opening trade markets, keeping taxes low, and reducing corporate income taxes, which are the only things that can grow the economy (other than deficit spending, and both candidates rightfully call that irresponsible). The 1929 crash was turned into a 12-year Depression because of protectionist trade policies and repressive tax rates (and a drought, but that didn't come into play until years later).
Not to mention he flat out said he would put a hault to spending and Obama would not even commit to which of his huge spending ideas he would even be willing to delay.
I think McCain's answer on what he would cut was insane. He'd have a total spending freeze? That's nuts, and would do a huge amount of damage to the nation's infrastructure which would only cost more to repair later. It is absolutely crazy to think of all the poor schools in this nation that wouldn't get their title I funds because McCain froze spending. Talk about the nose to spite the face. I understand that Obama dodged on exactly what programs would be cut or delayed. That is a fair knock against him. Eventually he did talk about the areas where he would cut. But to think McCain's insane answer was a strong point for him just doesn't make sense.
Cutting billions in government spending will do wonders for the economy. Everyone knows when the government spends money it is actually buried in a hole in the ground and creates no jobs or trickle down effect.
I disagree. How in the world can he possibly answer that question without a) knowing all the circumstances around the situations where he was forced to cut spending and b) not wanting to be backed into the corner lest the right use his words against him if he cuts something else first, even if it is the right thing to cut given the circumstances.
Haven't you learned from the debate on Friday that agreeing with a Conservative means that you're not ready to lead? Sheeez!
Really? A halt to spending? What do you think he wants to keep doing in Iraq? We're not dropping Monopoly money over.
Now those are good reasons that unfortunately get drowned out by a lot of the crazy crap flying around like Obama is really a Muslim, not a US citizen and etc...
LMFAO - yes if there's anybody who in the last week showed us they are ready to shepherd us through the economic storm, it's McCain/Palin....!
