Liberals, I'd be curious to hear your opinion on Obama's religion. Here is what we know:

"I was not raised in a particularly religious household, as undoubtedly many in the audience were. My father, who returned to Kenya when I was just two, was born Muslim but as an adult became an atheist. My mother, whose parents were non-practicing Baptists and Methodists, was probably one of the most spiritual and kindest people I've ever known, but grew up with a healthy skepticism of organized religion herself. As a consequence, so did I. It wasn't until after college, when I went to Chicago to work as a community organizer for a group of Christian churches, that I confronted my own spiritual dilemma. "
    - Obama

Not sure what we can read into this, frankly. Did he convert to Christianity out of selfish ambition and political convenience? Was he REALLY an atheist for the first 20+ years of his life? Did his father truly renounce Islam?

What we do know now is that he is a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Again, this assumes he is in fact sincere with his religious beliefs. Here is their value system:

Trinity United Church of Christ adopted the Black Value System written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee chaired by Vallmer Jordan in 1981. We believe in the following 12 precepts and covenantal statements. These Black Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Blacks are gathered. They must reflect on the following concepts:

    Commitment to God
    Commitment to the Black Community
    Commitment to the Black Family
Dedication to the Pursuit of Education
Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence
Adherence to the Black Work Ethic
    Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect
Disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness"
Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the Black Community
Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions
Pledge allegiance to all Black leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System
Personal commitment to embracement of the Black Value System.

How is this code not racist? If you substituted white for black, would not people be denouncing this focus on race?

Liberals, are you comfortable with these religious issues? Does it make you question Obama's ability to get the votes once he is vetted? Lots of questions to be answered...

you're so full of ****, any other thread you would be saying black people need to take responsibility for problems in the black community. you would be the first to single out blacks and black crime and black lack of education and say that black people should take responsibility, here is a chuch that tries to and now you have a problem with it.

    you have no credit.

    secondly, how is this racist?

Hmm, the Catholic churches I went to never dedicated themselves to a particular race. They might have different racial make-ups based on geography but that is all.

I see no problem with what the church is doing. who knows better than a black church about the best way to communicate with the black community? how effective do you think a black church concentrating its focus on the asian community?

I know some Asian Churchs that do not have explicit stated goal like that but they hardly ever care about anything outside of Asian communities.

Really reaching to find anything that might be damaging, this is why politics sucks.

you don't pick a race. but you pick a community...specfically the one you're in. if their community is predominantly black, then I don't see any problem with being intentional about serving black families.

In my town, there is a very large Catholic Church that only has service in Spanish, and a pretty good sized Catholic Church that only has service in Vietnamese. Neither restrict their service or ministry by race, but they have certainly dedicated themselves to particular races.

I think we should ask the good people of the planets Oliblish and Kolob what they think of Obama’s religion.

What do you think of Willard's church? I think Willard has to account for his church only allowing black people so that they could field good teams at BYU.

I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever, in religion, in philosophy, in politics or in anything else, where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to Heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all.

I think the most likely explanation is that Obama visited the church and liked the services and the people. I doubt that they have sermons about how to advance blacks at the expense of whites. If they did, I'm pretty sure Obama wouldn't be there, given the eloquence and conviction of his writings and speeches about racial issues. Even supposing that this stuff about Obama's church is troubling (it isn't), I'm also wondering how that could lead anyone to the conclusion that Obama's religion is a phony political ploy. If he wanted to use religion to make himself look good, then he would have spent time researching each church to see how it would look in the media, much more so than someone who was just looking for a church that was right for him.

Anyway, I don't think you can blame a black church for its emphasis on black people. It's not like blacks are the ones who decided that churches or society as a whole should be divided by race. Churches have traditionally been one of the strongest things holding black communities together, and it's appropriate that they place an emphasis on addressing issues that affect black people.

Just keep setting up more silly hoops, Trader. By the way, I'm still waiting for your one-word answer as to whether you support torture.

its like blaming black faternities for their existance when the only reason they exist is because blacks couldn't join the white frats.
