It is a shame that the Republicans are going to do everything they can to obstruct this from passing.

Most Americans disapprove of Obama's handling of the economy so far(CBS ), so I assume Americans will be against this, seeing as how it's more of the same.

Most Americans have no issues with their infrastructure being repaired.

If they do, perhaps they should revisit I35 in Minneapolis.

Well this is being presented as another stimulus to the economy

    http://apnews.myway.com/article/20100906/D9I2DUV01.html

And it seems exactly the same as every other economic stimulus bill Obama has come up with. So I don't think Americans will have much confidence in this.

Seems like he could have just used 50 billion of the stimulus to do this if we needed it.

Bankrupt states ate away the funding. If a separate bill doesn't address a state bailout, this bill, if passed, would likely share the same fate.

The fact of the matter is, the Corporate lackeys that run the US government have been looking for ways to create false economic booms since the fat days of the Dotcoms to keep the good times rolling. The fact of the matter is, when you globalize the means of production all workers tend downward the lowest world pay scales. It's supply and demand, you increase the supply of workers, you lower the demand for them and lower their compensation.

There has been no voice for the American working man in government in 50 years.

    Happy Labor Day!

Is it really that important to see Obama fail that you'd sacrifice the economy? C'mon, stimulus works in generating jobs - econ 101.

Tax cuts don't beyond a certain point, and we are way beyond that point.

Will be interesting to see if Republicans filibuster this. Many were saying the previous stimulus was inefficient and should have been more focused on pure infrastructure. Many governors have also said they wished more of the last stimulus was infrastructure spending.

To me, it seems like an easy call. Just take all the infrastructure spending that was planned for the next 5 years and accelerate it to this year. It doesn't add any spending because you're just moving the spending up. And labor & materials are cheaper now because of the recession so it actually costs less to build the stuff now than during a boom.

Over a long-term period it'll be better than just ignoring the infrastructure and keeping it as-is.

One thing I do know about government, infrastructure improvements usually pay for themselves in increased taxable economic activity. not a bridge to nowhere but just look at what was built next to the Sam Houston Tollway.

Roads, bridges and airports are the business of government.

It seems that a lot of people have ignored the fact that this is a long term project. That would indicate that the funding would be required over a period of years rather than "we need $50 billion right now today."

This is the type of stimulus that I have been wanting for a while now. It kills two birds with one stone. Get people back to work and address our infrastructure that is in disrepair.

    I support this.

    I'm with Refman on this.

Additionally, I would suggest paying for it by having executive and legislative support for Secretary of Defense Gates' suggested cuts to the absolutely beyond enormous defense budget, whether you measure the part that is counted or the part that it is conveniently not counted. It's the elephant in the room that we must discuss.

    Spot on, B-Bob.

Robert Gates is a very smart guy who, it appears, believes in Eisenhower's advice to beware of the industrial military complex. Too many people seemingly missed that memo.

No need to ask for more money, just cut the $50 billion from the Military budget and redistribute it towards public works.

You do understand that this is not how budgeting works, right? We don't live in a dictatorship - Obama can't just move funds around however he wants.

And how exactly would this create new jobs? Cut funding in one area and move it to somewhere else?
