I dont know much about her other than what is written in this article.
Being a conservative which Obama is not I think she probably doesn't represent my views but I will try to keep a open mind. Anyone know anything about this woman?? her history or political views? will the republicans object this nomination?

WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama has chosen US Solicitor General Elena Kagan as the next US Supreme Court justice, NBC TV reported.
If confirmed by the White House and later by the US Senate, Kagan will replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens.
Stevens, 90, announced his decision to retire in April.
Kagan's appointment would mark the culmination of a meteoric rise for the former Harvard law professor, who is a close ally of Obama and was only sworn in in March 2009 as the first female solicitor general.
At the time, Attorney General Eric Holder praised Kagan's "intelligence, experience and commitment to the rule of law."
In some ways, Kagan's is a surprise appointment, as Kagan has spent much of her time in academia teaching the law, rather than arguing cases on the courtroom floor.
Her lack of courtroom experience has been somewhat mitigated over the past 14 months in her role defending the government's position on cases before the Supreme Court.
Kagan would be only the fourth woman after Sandra Day O'Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor to sit on the nation's top court.
Some legal lobby groups had called on Obama to chose someone from outside the judiciary, who might be more in touch than the aspirations of ordinary people, than a candidate who spent years in the legal profession.
A president can put a stamp on American life for years after leaving office with the lifetime appointment of a Supreme Court justice.
Stevens, 90, joined the bench amid the traumatic fallout of the Watergate scandal in the 1970s, and will step down after 34 years, with bitter partisanship once again tearing at the fabric of American politics.
Yet his departure announced last month, is unlikely to change the current court's conservative leaning.

She looks like some male actor, I can't decide which one, in "drag." He or she, whoever. Pure politico; a jurist would have been nice, like, you know, a judge.

A month or two ago, I heard people on Fox calling her an "ivory tower academic" with no experience in a corporate law firm which, I guess was their litmus test. I don't think they'll be too thrilled. She represents East Coast/Ivy League liberal elitism in their minds.

Kagan would be the first justice in almost 40 years not to have prior judicial experience. That's a bit of a trip, considering the job she's apparently being nominated for. She's been a supporter of the expansion of presidential power. I'm not crazy about that. She's an ardent supporter of gay rights, which I think is absolutely groovy. Kind of a mixed bag, from where I sit. Her academic record is simply outstanding. Assuming intelligence to be an asset, she has that in spades.

This is one I'll have to do some thinking about.

    Interesting things.

If confirmed 4 out of the 9 will be New Yorkers

3 women and 1 black male - lowest Ratio of White men on the Supreme Court in history. No Protestant on the Court. [6 Catholics, 3 Jewish]

I dunno anything about her . .. but this will be interesting confirmation.

The first time I saw her picture, my first thought was "Oh, gee, Conservatives will LOVE this." This is without me knowing anything about her politics, credentials, or belief system.

hmm not having any judicial experience is not necessarily a bad thing. I think that is acutally a plus for her to be from the outside. As for supporting the expansion of presidential power that is definitely a big NO NO... Hmm gay rights is fine by me. Well I'll see what sort of stuff people will dig up on her now that she has been nominated.

and yes yes she? is definitely not attractive. but hey this isnt a beauty contest

That is an assumption. Are you saying the BEST AND BRIGHTEST are Ivy and everyone else is . .. uhm . . no so???? [Which mind you money, influence and politics can buy you into Ivy . .. ]

When you look at a country become more about the HAVES and the HAVE NOTS. . . Seeing a supreme court made of nearly nothing but 'ELITES' and knowing getting into the white house/senate takes an insane amount of money . . [which means you are either an ELITE or someone purchased by them .. er . .backed by them so you leanings are to their favor]

Seeming this just continues a building of a type of Caste System.

It is not about being the best . . . it is about have the Pedigree.
THE PEDIGREE seems to be the most important thing in these matters.
IVY just have some very good spin doctoring/advertising/public image consulting.

On NPR this morning they really did not have much to say about her except her history. From a policy standpoint, I'm not sure what there is to go on...

    meh.
