Obama has said the Pentagon’s space program -- which spent about $22 billion in fiscal year 2008, almost a third more than NASA’s budget -- could be tapped to speed the civilian agency toward its goals as the recession pressures federal spending.

Obama Moves to Counter China in Space With Pentagon-NASA Link

President-elect Barack Obama will probably tear down long-standing barriers between the U.S.’s civilian and military space programs to speed up a mission to the moon amid the prospect of a new space race with China.

Obama’s transition team is considering a collaboration between the Defense Department and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration because military rockets may be cheaper and ready sooner than the space agency’s planned launch vehicle, which isn’t slated to fly until 2015, according to people who’ve discussed the idea with the Obama team.

The potential change comes as Pentagon concerns are rising over China’s space ambitions because of what is perceived as an eventual threat to U.S. defense satellites, the lofty battlefield eyes of the military.

“The Obama administration will have all those issues on the table,” said Neal Lane, who served as President Bill Clinton’s science adviser and wrote recently that Obama must make early decisions critical to retaining U.S. space dominance. “The foreign affairs and national security implications have to be considered.”

Which poster was it that was trashing Obama because he wouldn't spend money on NASA?

Positive: Combining their programs could streamline some costs.

Negative: Getting in a space race with China could waste billions(particularly with our concern being getting to the moon, seeing as that doesn't seem like a giant step foward from 40 years ago).

Astronomy is absolutely facinating to me, but billions in deficit spending on NASA seems excesive. Maybe I just don't see the benefit.

    What?

But seriously, research spins off technology. The problem with spending on NASA as it currently exists, I think, is that they're not pushing technology barriers very much. The execrable space station was all off the shelf, as far as I can tell. What good is that?

And Juan, that was Mr. Meowgi, the anger-filled Buddhist.

Is it weird that NASA's big goal these days is trying to get to the moon by 2015?

Weird to me. I hope that goal is revisited.

The issue of space junk may make manned space flight irrelevant within a couple of decades anyway.

do you understand the core of this is to lower the budget of Nasa?

I doubt they can actually go to the moon on existing lift vehicles.

The thing is, the DoD/USAF and NASA were both working together on the shuttle project. Once the Challenger blew up, and DoD/USAF saw how inept the NASA management was in the aftermath, they wanted nothing to do with NASA.

wrong, they just wanted nothing to do with the shuttle.

They still used like 1/3 third of the missions to do DOD missions.

oh i thought the real Mr. M

I think the guy I was answering was implying that Obama was supposed to cut costs but is now helping.

My point is this is not a help more of a "do it this way"

It will not happen anyways, because there are no vehicles that will work.

You're exactly right -- he was referring to the wax on, wax off strategy of Nasa's management system. Pgabs has no idea what he is talking about.
    _____

Btw -- I expect Nasa to fight this tooth and nail.

I think they're using all their nails to keep the space station running. But maybe they will fight this tooth.

yeah its basically their Apollo strategy again.

They flew all the vehicles in orbit before they flew them in orbit over the moon. So they want to test their new ship on the moon before Mars.

Many people are against this though. A large segment I think called MArs direct or something wants to skip the moon to save money and speed up the Mars landings.

If NASA is that inept, the DOD should just do a takeover instead of a collaboration.
