Some speculation by the writer here, but I thought it was an interesting topic of discussion. I've followed Randolph this year (he's on my fantasy team) and he is REALLY underrated. I would LOVE for the Rockets to go after him -- he'd be a much welcome upgrade over Scola.

Extremely hard to stop once he gets the ball in the paint, Randolph has a soft touch around the rim. He's extremely strong and impossible to move. He's an ELITE rebounder; mostly because he's so hard to move. Defensively, he's not a shutdown defender but he's still an upgrade over Scola just due to his massive frame.

Chuck Hayes, the Rockets best post defender, had this to say about Zach:

With the Rockets not having adequate cap space this summer to pursue Zach Randolph, could this be one of those 'out-of-nowhere' trades? Would the Grizzlies even consider giving up Zach when they're still fighting for a playoff spot?

I guess Randolph would play center.

He might be able to, but his best position is at the PF. If we could somehow acquire him and add a Kendrick Perkins type to our team this summer, our front court would suddenly turn into a strength.

I agree he's underrated, but i'm just not sure how he'd fit with scola. Are we trading scola for a center? Would randolph play center? That may hurt his production.

I'm envisioning a Scola-Randolph trade. Obviously would need more guys to make the $ work, but:

Randolph is going to be more expensive than Scola and MEM already has Conley/Gay tied up. They seem to have chosen to re-sign Marc over Zach, so he appears expendable.

Scola's contract is pretty reasonable for his production, cheaper than Zach, and I think he might fit in well on the court and off next to Marc Gasol.

Z-Bo can ball, but has been dogged by 'issues' since college. He talks, and maybe acts, like he 'gets it' now. From a talent perspective he is a load. The question, which is above my pay grade, is how big a load of baggage is he carrying 2/13/11?

Randolph is not an upgrade over Scola. Scola win 3-1 this year without a decente center.

If he's under-priced due to his baggage, I can see the team pursue him, since he's someone you can dump the ball into in the paint and draw double-teams (Scola only does it on occasion), but doesn't exactly fill a need for the paint-patrolling shot-challenging big and won't make the D much better.

I wouldnt mind seeing Randolph in Rocket Red.

You wouldnt have to move Scola to do it either , he could come off the bench and be a huge asset.

For the rest of this season you could go with a Randolph-Hayes front line , in the offseason picking up another center like either DeAndre Jordan or maybe Perkins would go a long way twards solving this teams problems.

Not really seeing the point in a Scola for Randolph swap. Both are similar players who aren't known for their D which is what we need. Rather have Scola since he's become a home favorite here and has a better attitude.

Yeah i wasn't sure Memphis would want scola, but i can see how they'd need veteran leadership, although it does nothing for their lack of defense. For us, we actually get a year younger and don't really lose much, maybe some experience, but i really don't think Scola's int'l experience has been much of an advantage.

    He'd definitely be expensive though...

    Flawed logic.

Zach Randolph is a clear upgrade over Scola; it should be obvious to anyone who watches either regularly. I don't see the Rockets trading for Zach unless it involves moving Luis -- it would be silly to have Scola & Zach both on big contracts locked into the PF spot.

As RV6 pointed out, Randolph would also be a lot more expensive than Scola; but I think he's definitely worth it. You're talking about the third best rebounder in the NBA in Randolph. While he may not have much of an impact shotblocking on defense, his big body and rebounding skills would certainly upgrade our defense over Scola.

Why would you trade for someone that averages a double-double and bring him off the bench? A trade with Memphis would almost guarantee us losing Scola and others to make money match.

Jordan isn't going anywhere and neither is Perkins.

Well, no offense, but I've watched Randolph his whole career and ........this was a contract year for him. Old dog and spots deal here.....

Fantastic! Then you realize that he's been averaging 20/10 in four of his last five seasons and that this year isn't just "contract year" numbers.

In case nobody has been able to tell yet, I'm very high on Zach Randolph.

Randolph's game has matured a lot since his NY/Clipper days. I agree with LTF, he would be an upgrade over Scola.

Yeah, he puts up good numbers but is not about winning basketball.
