I'm considering a move to the NYC area in the next 6-8 weeks. Can anyone tell me what some good forums/message boards are where I can ask questions I guess to a more NYC-centric group. I have spent some considerable time there in the past, but I never really bothered to figure out what to do regarding a permanent move for more than a year or two. Are there any other good website resources? Thanks.
www.nyyfans.com Its the clutchfans of yankee fans. You'll find many helpful people over there. Good luck.
there's like 10-15 regular posters from NYC online here (myself included - and I am a know-it-all to boot).
You've got to be kidding. As much as I love New York, you're done. Go to whatever new team you choose. Mr. Brightside= Andy Pettitte
What would you like to know? I'm sure there are people here who can help. I too moved here recently. NY is the place to be no diggity doubt!
I've only lived here 3 years, but I'd be glad to help. I got a lot of good info from people on this board before I moved here from H-town. You're gonna love this place, btw. Especially if you like music.
Cool. Thanks. I always knew CF.net was a one stop shop. Basically, I am looking to move close enough to NYC, but a little bit away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I was told to look into places on the Gold Coast, like Jersey City or Hoboken. I've heard Jersey City is a little dangerous, but where I was looking at (downtown/waterfront) area is in a housing renaissance mode right now and is much safer than the rest of the area. My employer is paying me enough that I can live on the Upper's, but it is still a bit too congested for me. Plus I plan on bringing a car with me. Also the idea of living a little away from Manhattan, gives me nearly double the housing buying power as if I stayed in the actual city. In addition, the apartments/condo's are newer, which is a big factor for me as well The main catching point is that downtown Manhattan is only a PATH train ride away from either Jersey City or Hoboken. Are there other parts of NYC area, that are like this which are a little less congested and maybe 10-20 minutes or less away from Manhattan by subway ride?
Jerry, this is the way society functions. Aren't you a part of society? Because if you don't want to be a part of society, Jerry, why don't you just get in your car and move to the East Side!
brooklyn: park slope, flatbush, downtown brooklyn, clinton hill, red hook/dumbo, caroll gardens.. nice brownstones, good nightlife and amenities
I would live in Brooklyn/Queens before I'd go to jersey. Investigate Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Park Slope, Williamsburg, Fort Green, Astoria. Actually, come to think of it if you want brand new condo developements, Long Island City is perfect for what you are looking for. It is right on the east river across from manhattan and there's a ton of development that has gone up in the last 10 years. Go to the NY Times website and do a search in their real estate section for apartments in LIC and it will give you an idea of what is there.
You know, you might be better off ditching your car (like I did) if you plan on coming up here.. It seems as if you'd like to stay relatively close to the city and depending on where you decide the car might be more of a pain than a convenience. You may not use your car enough to be worth the trouble. In any case, I heard parts of Queens and Brooklyn are very popular nowdays; Astoria and Williamsburg specifically. Alot of newer development. Personally, I would rather live out there than in Jersey.
A good friend of mine, who needed to work in New York for about a year, ended up staying on Long Island, and really liked it. He worked and partied in Manhattan (where he had lived years before), and be-bopped back to Long Island to crash. Turned out well for him. He didn't use a car, except around where he lived.
actually it's a bit of a misnomer, rather than being out on Long Island proper, Long Island City is the westernmost part of queens, right next to manhattan. It took me years to figure that out.
I'm actually thinking about moving to Brooklyn Heights. Closer to work and about $1000-1500 less a month in rent so far.
Long Island City (in queens accross from Manhatten) is very up and coming. Best deal=Astoria, but you might not like living in Athens West. If you can touch up on some Greek than you will live like a king and have a 5-10 min subway ride to Times square + a place to park your car. Brookland is close too but unless you are working on Wall Street than long subway rides will piss you off. Please note I live in Houston Tx
Yeah, in Long Island you would definitely need a car.. Plus the LIRR >>>>> Subway any freakin day, much faster and cleaner although it costs quite a bit more. If you don't mind a more suburban lifestyle, you should consider other parts of Queens and Long Island (Bayside, Great Neck, Manhasset).
