Rape Victim Stoned to Death in Somalia Was 13, U.N. Says

    By REUTERS

NAIROBI, Kenya - The United Nations said Tuesday that a Somali stoned to death by Islamist militants after she had been accused of adultery was a 13-year-old girl who had been raped while visiting her grandmother.

In the first such public killing by the militants in about two years, she was placed in a hole and stoned to death on Oct. 28 in a rebel-held port city, Kismayu, in front of a crowd, after local leaders said she was guilty under Shariah, the legal code of Islam based on the Koran.

Witnesses said at the time that the victim had been a 23-year-old woman.

“Reports indicate that she had been raped by three men while traveling on foot to visit her grandmother in the war-torn capital, Mogadishu,” Unicef, the United Nations children’s agency, said in a statement.

“Following the assault, she sought protection from the authorities, who then accused her of adultery and sentenced her to death,” Unicef added. “A child was victimized twice — first by the perpetrators of the rape and then by those responsible for administering justice.”

Unicef said the episode highlighted the vulnerability of girls and women in Somalia, which has suffered under cycles of civil conflict for the past 17 years. In the latest cycle, Islamist rebels are fighting the government and their Ethiopian military backers.

Rebel spokesmen could not be reached immediately to respond to Unicef’s accusation.

The human rights group Amnesty International has identified the girl as Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow and said she was killed by 50 men who stoned her in a stadium in Kismayu in front of about 1,000 spectators.

Her father and other sources were quoted by Amnesty International as saying that she had been raped by three men.

When the family tried to report the rape to the Shabab militia that controls Kismayu, the girl was accused of adultery and was detained. None of the men she accused of rape have been arrested.

<strike>obviously we need to further negotiate and understand these people's culture.

Before we went there with military it was a garden with chocolate rivers and rainbows with candy for everyone.

Plus its her own fault for being the victim of sexual assault. She should have thought about the consequences before being brutally raped by 3 grown men.</strike>

oops did not see this was in the hangout.

Here is my comedic and non politcal reply

(This is going to be moved to the D&D soon enough)

There are radical fundamentalists in both Christianity and Islam.

The extreme misogyny in that part of the world is what saddens me.

Even when I see young ladies at UH walking around all covered up wearing the things over their head, I realize it it part of their culture... but I think about the women in the Fundamentalist Islamic countries who are forced to live under such horrific conditions.

Although a correct statement, I have never EVER heard of 1000 Christians watching 30 male Christians stoning a 13 yr old female Christian for being raped, and then have the majority of Christian do nothing about it.

I'm sure there a lot of Muslims who don't approve of this brutality.

It is appalling and barbaric that is for sure.

Christians have been known to do some pretty awful stuff "In the name of God" as well.

Of course the Crusades were quite a while ago.

    This is 2008.

Regardless of the religious motive, this is a human life that was unjustly taken.

I am appalled that people use God to do such ugly things.

There is no excuse for this, Islamic Militants are killing their own religion.

The religious leaders that condone these things should be hunted down and killed.

True, but at the same time I've never seen a nation with a majority Muslim population start a war with another nation, and then reelect that Muslim leader who claimed some amount of divinity in the war making.

LOL...you're right...I don't know why I thought there were no comparison between the two.

Damn, Christianity sucks. I'm going back to being an athiest...much less complicated in discussion.

    The Spanish Inquisition?

The Pope whiping out the Cathars in France?

The Crusades? Jim Jones, David Koresh..etc..etc....etc...

Are you kidding me? Christianity has had it's hands dirty since it's inception.

People have done HORRID things in the name of all religion.

I believe in God, I do NOT believe in Religion.

    God created man......man created religion.

Firstly, I was acknowledging you with some humor.

Secondly, what the hell do you want me to say when I see a comparison of Christianity and Islam? "Cool"? Good god, I was an athiest for the first 35 years of my life (and it WAS less complicated in discussion) so excuse me if my enthusiam for things Christian makes me a bit defensive when someone compares it to Islam. And yes, I do recognize that Christianity has a less than spectacular history.

Thirdly, I had no intention of putting words in your mouth...not my style.

Lastly, I notice your initial response to me was filled with substance.

    Ok.

I dunno. Frankly it's weird to me that you find the idea so outrageous.

Acknowledged. I was not trying to be offensive at all. It's just the truth, as you yourself acknowledge:

It's ok. You were being defensive. I was certainly provacative, but pissing you off was not my intent.

Oh come on. Now you're just being silly. The whole point was that the substance in question to refute your original statement was absurdly obvious.

Moreover, given that my initial responce was framed as a question, I was giving you a chance to acknowledge said substance.

You think I was "comparing Christianity to Islam" ?

I am illustrating that its not only Islam that carries out horrific deeds in the name of God.

There are some Christians (I know, I was raised by one) who believe radical, radical things.

My step-dad believes that having any form of insurance is like "testing God" and he actually believes getting insurance for anything is begging for that travesty to happen to you. I swear to God, he was hinting at it and I asked him point blank if he thought that If I bought Life insurance I was begging for God to smite me, and he didn't say no. Unbelievable ignorance, and I grew up with it instilled in me.

I mean try growing up with all that horse**** being clogged into your brain.

Its a shock to the system to have to free your mind and unlearn the idiocy.

I'm trying every day to figure out where God truly is.
