Jeff Van Gundy believes Tracy McGrady would work out just fine with the Knicks, if he’s traded here.

The former Knicks and Rockets coach cited McGrady’s passing ability and basketball intelligence — but added one big proviso: McGrady’s health.

“If he’s healthy, which I think everything is based on his health ... he’ll play well anywhere in the NBA, any city,” Van Gundy, now an ESPN analyst, told The Post yesterday.

McGrady, coming back from microfracture knee surgery, has played just six games this season after playing only 35 last year.

“That surgery is obviously a very significant surgery, and he hasn’t played significant minutes in a long time,” said Van Gundy, who coached McGrady for three years in Houston.

“So to expect him when he does come there to be really good right away, I think would be a stretch, because he hasn’t played a lot of basketball.”

If McGrady is healthy, Van Gundy said, Garden fans would appreciate his game.

“He is most thought of as a prolific scorer, but I think his greatest attribute is he’s one of the best passing wing players to have ever played the game,” the former coach said.

“He’s a great pick-and-roll player, and he’s going to get guys really good shots.”

Van Gundy also called McGrady “a great defender” who has “an incredibly high basketball IQ.”

“Father Time started to chip away at some of that athleticism,” Van Gundy said.

“But he’s still a good athlete who’s incredibly unselfish and really understands how to play basketball. So I think that would endear him to the New York fans.

“But a lot of it depends on if they are able to acquire his services, which is still a big if, whether he is there for a short term or long term. You can’t fall in love with a guy in 30 games.”

JVG knew he wore tmac down to pieces (riding him solo) when he was here, so he's just saying the right things.

Sure why not? Mac would help any team if healthy.

Tmac can guarantee any team to bring them to playoffs. But that's all.

JVG isn't dumb. He knows Mac even if he comes back at 70% will still be a hell of a player. Of course he will help the Knicks. Plus we all know NY is banking on getting a big name free agent to sign. Big names only attract other big names. I certainly won't be surprised to see Mac sign there in the future for very little, if it means playing with two other big names.

I trust JVG basketball knowledge over anyone on this message board. Strong words in the support of McGrady. Its funny how the rockets can currently use what McGrady brings to the table but are just too stubborn to do so. Whatever its time to move on. But nice words from JVG.

Thanks JVG. Maybe that will make Walsh let the 2011 swap and 2012 pick be unprotected?

That goes without saying.....when he was healthy and in his prime Tracy was an offensive force. No doubt about that.

What JVG is saying is that it is time for Tmac to realize his destiny...

    lol, what a loaded endorsement.

    Is he helping Tmac out?

Is he secretly hoping to screw the Knicks?

    Both, and, or?

You have to admire JVG's loyalty to his players. Even though, Tmac was partially to blame for his failures in Houston.

I agree with JVG. As for contributing here, the problem was that he and the other players couldn't keep him from dominating the play. In the final analysis, he didn't add much.

~IF~ healthy... There's always that big "if". When was the last time McGrady was actually healthy? Of course he'd help them "if" healthy.

I guess you skimmed over this part:

    [rquoter]
Van Gundy also called McGrady “a great defender” [/rquoter]

Yeah, when McGrady is healthy he is a good player, but when is he ever healthy? New York has no interest in keeping him long term..
