The following four articles, all by Marc Berman, have appeared in the NY Post during the past week:

January 20, 2002 -- Aww, man, Layden is trying but can't get Nick Van Exel/Raef LaFrentz, Rasheed Wallace/Bonzi Wells, or Tim Thomas!

"They've been as aggressive as any team in the league in talking," one league executive said. "They're at the top of the list.... But they got a team that's hard to make a deal with because of the contracts."

January 22, 2002 -- Aww, man, Layden tried but couldn't get Hakeem!

Olajuwon told The Post the Rockets and Knicks had a sign-and-trade worked out in case he tabbed them as his final choice. Toronto won the Olajuwon sweepstakes because the 39-year-old future Hall of Famer sensed the Knicks were in decline...

January 25, 2002 -- Aww, man, Layden tried but couldn't get Marbury!

According to a source, Marbury told one member of the Nets' family two days before the historic Jason Kidd trade, "I hope they ship me out west. That way I'll have a better chance of being traded to the Knicks." [...]

League executives believe it's possible the Suns would eventually deal Marbury, probably in the summer. Knick GM Scott Layden had no chance of getting Marbury when he was with the Nets, who would never deal him to their cross-river rivals.

January 26, 2002 -- Aww, man, Layden is trying but can't get Erick Dampier!

While all the talk has centered on the Knicks trying to pry third-string big man Marc Jackson from the Warriors, GM Scott Layden actually has worked harder on obtaining Golden State's 6-11 starting center Erick Dampier, according to sources.

In fact, Layden is trying to get a third team involved in a Dampier deal since the Knicks and Warriors have no match.

Maybe if Layden had worked as hard over the summer on making deals as he is now on PR spins to save his job ("Gosh, I could have made all these great deals if the guy before me hadn't screwed up the roster"), the Knicks wouldn't be in such crappy shape.
