Peter Vecsey of THE NEW YORK POST writes, “I have it on excellent authority the Pacers and Kings are exceedingly close to swapping Ron Artest (three more years after this on his contract with a right to opt out after two) for Peja Stojakovic, who has the freedom to opt out after this season or play out the next. Then again, let me put it another way: The two teams are as close as my Paper Clips were to acquiring Artest for Corey Maggette before an Indiana doctor decided the swingman's left ankle was too great a risk. According to three sources, it's strictly Sacramento's call; the Pacers are agreeable and ready to deal, and are waiting for the Kings to make up their mind.”

I now officially wish that Vecsey would tell everyone that I will never win the lottery and have a hot tub filled with supermodels.

Well, it's always been a real long shot to get Artest. We just don't have a plethora of talent after TMac and Yao. Any combination of two other players on the team and an unprotected first rounder this year is a steal for Artest.

I didn't hear rumors about getting Peja to try and spin him for Artest, but I love the idea. Peja's stock will never be lower, and I see a big comeback for him on another team. I imagine that Peja and other stuff (a protected #1 pick or Head, etc.) would get it done. Artest would definitely be worth that.

And if we traded for Peja and couldn't spin him for Artest? You could certainly play him and TMac at the same time or, in cases where you don't want TMac guarding a SG, at worst Peja would make a hell of a sixth man.

This is all me dreaming though. It ain't gonna happen.

According to Larry Bird, there are 5 teams in the Western Conf who have decent offers on the table, and he talked extensively about "being patient" and not taking on contracts in return...IMO this gives the Rockets at least an outside shot, although I will admit it's unlikely we land him.

Just wanted to add this from Indystar- quoting Larry Bird

Bird believes they won't have to wait much longer. He said the Pacers are talking with "five, maybe six" teams, all in the Western Conference. He doesn't expect more than two teams to be included in the deal, and hopes not to have to package
"I can't say we're in love with all the deals, but they're getting better," Bird said. "Last week was a pretty good week. The offers improved. There's some teams that want no part of him, and others who say, 'This is the guy we need to get over the hump.'
"They know he can be a difference-maker. I have to agree with them."
Luxury tax considerations have complicated matters, as the Pacers don't want to take on too much additional salary in a trade.
"I'm a firm believer you have to be patient in this league," Bird said. "The teams that are patient in trades (have more success). We'd like to get this done, but we've got a job to do and we have to make sure our fans are happy with what we get. They're our paying customers and we're trying to do our best for them."

Vecsy posts 99.999% of scoops that pass in front of him. He uses very good sources, and doesn't make up what he writes. His problem is, he filters none of what he hears. So it's not that he writes BS, it's more that only 4% is destined to come about.

Beats Sam "Trader" Smith at the Chicago Tribune, who makes up rumors to have something to write about.
