Great news for those of us that enjoy Hubie Brown as an NBA analyist. I personally feel he is one of the best in the game. There isn't any "show" when he is doing the game. He is trying to teach the viewer. I am excited that ABC was smart and stepped up and got Hubie as their lead NBA analyist to pair with Al Michaels. ### http://newyorkpost.com/sports/32272.htm Hubie Brown will join Al Michaels on ABC’s lead announce team this season, The Post has learned. Brown, 71, who resigned as Grizzlies coach on Thanksgiving Day, resumes a broadcasting career that spanned from 1982-2001 and included No. 1 analyst gigs at CBS and TNT. His return to the booth comes Christmas Day for the ballyhooed Lakers-Heat game, the first meeting of exteammates Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. Brown followed the path blazed last year by Doc Rivers, who took a job with ABC after Orlando fired him early in the season. Rivers grabbed the work when it seemed destined for Mark Jackson. This season, ABC inquired about Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson before going with Brown. In one of several odd twists, ABC executive producer Mike Pearl, who reduced Brown’s on-air role when he ran TNT’s NBA programming in 2001, made the call on this hire. Pearl’s decision, according to sources, was influenced by Michaels and Grizzlies president of basketball operations Jerry West. Brown and West split on poor terms in Memphis, a source said, but West spoke with his good friend Michaels about teaming with Brown. Mike Fratello, the soon to- be Memphis coach, worked at TNT before jumping back into coaching.
I love it when Hubbie is working a game. Since he's with ABC, will he do ESPN games, or is he striclty ABC?
Well Vecsey wrote the article. So that part of the article I am a bit leery about to be honest with you. And to answer the ESPN/ABC game question. My guess is that Hubie will ONLY work ABC games, much like Doc Rivers did last year. ABC is trying to differentiate itself from the ESPN coverage of games. Chances are though that Hubie might work some ESPN playoff games, especially in the later rounds. That's what Doc did last year on the Eastern Conference Finals.
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! i had forgotten this consequence of hubie quitting. now i'll have to hear him say a team should go for the "quick 2" down 7 with 5 seconds left. shoot the damn 3! why couldn't jvg quit first? it would help the rockets and i actually liked him on telecasts. win-win. of course with the czar gone jvg might not have the little rivalry dynamic he had going back then on tnt.
He's better than Doc. I love hearing Hubie call a game. and I must say, when he went to coach the grizz, I ,as an NBA fan, was a little saddened not being able to hear his analysis anymore. He is the Peter Gammons of the NBA.
He is also a five-tool color analyst. Well, maybe he can work those lines seeing as ESPN carries the draft.
The worst part about having him in Memphis, to me, was him off the telecasts. He's an acquired taste, but I dig him.
I wish they'd pair him with Dick Stockton. They did a great job on CBS back in the 80's/early 90's (1990 was their last year).
Dick Stockton is by far my fav NBA play by play guy of all time. His voice calling the Celts/Lakers matchups of the 80s was awesome.
