I didn't see this posted ... always fun to see the New York media (Newsday in particular) continue to think that the Houston Astros are the Yankees farm team. Some good reminder threads: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=96718 http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=96415 http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=99777 http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...5feb05,0,5677587.column?coll=ny-yankees-print Yankees eye Clemens - or, down the road, Pettitte The only mystery surrounding Roger Clemens' return now seems to be which team he'll return to. The Yankees are - no surprise - very interested. Yankees people think it will be a two-team derby between them and the Astros for Clemens. The Yankees actually view Houston as a slight favorite for Clemens, even though he'd have to sit out until May 1 to re-sign with the Astros. So the Yankees have their eye on Clemens' little buddy Andy Pettitte as a backup plan. They see Pettitte's ridiculously backloaded contract ($17.5 million in '06) as a potential impetus for a midseason trade should Houston fall out of the race. Rangers owner Tom Hicks, a Longhorn like Clemens, is looking desperate trying to get Clemens' attention. But the Rangers probably are running no better than third right now. Boston's best hope is that he stays somewhere in Texas (and doesn't come back to the Bronx) because there's no chance he's going back to the Red Sox. But don't be surprised to see Boston target Pettitte, too, considering its bid of $54 million for four years was more money and years than anyone else offered two winters ago. But just like with Clemens, it's up to Pettitte; he has a no-trade provision.
Oh hell no. Those columnists and any fans that believe they have a chance at Pettitte must be dreaming.
I wouldn't be suprised to see Pettitte retire after this season. He might only be 34, but he's an old 34 with the elbow injury and pitching an extra month of baseball than others for his entire career. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Although the Astros have spoken to Pettitte about a contract extension, the left-hander said he can’t commit to anything long term with Houston at this point in his career. “I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Pettitte said. “I’ll always try to be as honest as I can with everybody. I’m going to play this year out, and I’ll evaluate how my body feels and mentally how I feel … mentally more than anything. -Yes Network
The article didn't say they they thought they would get them or that the players were interested - just that those teams are interested in the players.
Exactly. What are the Yankees going to say? "No, we'd never want those guys back"? Of course not - they'd love them back, for relatively cheap. And even if you asked Rocket and Andy, would they say "never"? Of course not. Even if they would never, ever rejoin the Yankees, actually saying so could only hurt their market. The only party that would say "never" would be the Astros, and why would a NY reporter bother to ask them anything?
So, February 5th for "Myopic NY press thinking the Yankees could get anyone they want just because they're the Yankees". Who won the pool?
