    Padgett comes alive

Threes off bench give Nets a boost

    BY OHM YOUNGMISUK
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Laughter and chatter echoed through the showers and the Nets' locker room for the first time in a week. Moments before, Richard Jefferson walked off the Meadowlands floor with his hands locked together in prayer, giving thanks for the Nets' first home victory since Nov. 19.
"I was just like, 'it was about time we got a couple of rolls,'" Jefferson said after the Nets outlasted Denver, 115-106, in overtime on Friday night. "When things were going bad, we were tipping in balls for Charlotte (in a loss). Things weren't going our way."

It may only be mid-December, but the Nets desperately needed a win. A three-game losing streak had Nets players nervously wondering if they were going to be traded. Others were mentally drained trying to figure out what was wrong with the team.

One win by no means fixes all of the Nets' flaws. Team president Rod Thorn and GM Ed Stefanski will continue to investigate possible trade scenarios. The Nets (10-12) badly need an athletic big man in the mold of Stromile Swift, Chris Wilcox or Steven Hunter. They could use a defensively oriented player like Eric Williams. And they will always have their eyes on Kevin Garnett.

What appears more likely to happen is a minor deal that would bolster the Nets' struggling bench. But before the Nets make any trades, they got a glimpse of what one of their reserves is capable of.

Scott Padgett hit all five of his three-point attempts and scored 15 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help the Nets end their four-game home slide.

After not getting consistent playing time, Padgett showed his worth and he hopes to help the Nets start a winning streak at home tonight against Golden State.

"That is what we brought him here for," Jefferson said. "We didn't bring him in here to set picks or rebound. We brought him here to hit some shots and he hit them."

Padgett is averaging only 11 minutes a game but he has hit 13-of-25 three-pointers. Padgett has played sparingly as Lawrence Frank tinkers with his rotation.

"If you follow Scott's career, many times he's been the ninth man in an eight-man rotation or the 10th man," Frank said. "But the reason why he has such value is even though he's not always in the rotation, he's always ready to go. There are some guys on the outside of a rotation, it's hard for them to keep themselves ready, mentally or physically."

Jeff McInnis and Marc Jackson have been frustrated with their sporadic playing time. But on Friday night, nobody was upset or annoyed.

"When you lose whatever we did in a row, it could be demoralizing," Padgett said. "So you need something positive to get it turned around, and this was a good way to get it turned around. But saying that, we still have to come out Sunday and play like we did (against Golden State)."

Frank is killing that team by giving those minutes to Clifford Robinson. First off, Clifford is half the defender he used to be. Secondly:

Scott Padgett -- 18.2 points, 12.8 rebounds per 48 minutes. 52 percent on threes.

Robinson -- 10.3 points, 6.4 rebounds per 48 minutes. 29 percent on threes.

And Robinson plays more than TWICE the minutes Padgett does.

Padgett statistically/48 is always off da hook no matter what team he's on. Coaches just won't play him though. I think he's just got a "shooter only" stigma that he will never live down.

it took jvg almost a year and a half to figure out he should play padgett, and when he did padgett of course tore it up. he had a huge plus/minus, like +9 or something. he is very valuable as a backup pf b/c his defense isn't a problem b/c most backkup pf's can't score and his offense is great b/c most pf's won't come out to guard him. it's makes him a very good matchup for your team. it sucked to see him go (though if he didn't think he would play with swift coming in he had to leave) but hopefully frank will figure it out and start playing him.
