Have any of you guys heard of these things? In a nutshell there are apparently hundreds of "spy" shortwave broadcasts all around the globe that either periodically or constantly broadcast strings of numbers, alpha numerics, tones, buzzers, or other distinguished sounds. When you listen to them, and know what they are, they are eerie as hell. There are interesting sites on the net. I just thought I would throw it out there. Here is a link to one of the sites with audio. (of course it was last updated 4 years ago) http://home.freeuk.com/spook007/
Check out the Connet Project boxset. it's a 4 cd collection of this stuff. I love it. Wilco used a ton of the samples from it on Hoteal Yankee Foxtrot (in fact , the title is taken from one of the samples).
This is fascinating. Some other good links about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbers_station http://www.simonmason.karoo.net/page30.html -- has a book about it http://www.spynumbers.com/ http://www.salon.com/people/feature/1999/09/16/numbers/
I have surfed around and found about twenty minutes of stuff that I would like to find some use for...either on the ari at 610 or on some of my new music. It is mesmerizing. If you get a sec look up the numbers station info on npr and listen to the broadcast they did. It is informative and cool.
