SACRAMENTO, Calif. - It could be a Barry, Barry interesting off-season for the Denver Nuggets.

A source close to the situation said Sunday that two players high on the team's list of free-agent candidates for next summer are Seattle shooting guard Brent Barry and New Jersey power forward Kenyon Martin. The Nuggets already have Brent's brother Jon, and he said he would love to see the team go after Brent.

"He'd be great," Jon Barry said before Denver's 117-106 loss Sunday to Sacramento. "He's an open-court player. He's a great athlete. He'd be a great fit the way (the Nuggets are) playing. I'll probably talk to him about it at some point."

Jon, on the injured list because of a cervical strain, signed a one-year, $3 million deal last summer. He said it wouldn't be awkward if the Nuggets went after his brother when both play the same position and both would be free agents.

"If I play better, maybe they'll want to keep me around," said Jon, 34, averaging 6.6 points. "(Brent's) young. He's got a lot of years left."

Brent, 32, is making $5.4 million in the final year of a six-year, $27 million contract. The 6-foot-6 Brent, averaging 11.0 points and 5.3 assists, also can play point guard.

The Nuggets, who could have as much as $22 million of salary-cap room, have an interest in a big, versatile guard. They also will be looking for a top big man, a role the 6-9 Martin could fill.

Martin, averaging 17.2 points and 9.3 rounds while making $5.13 million, will be a restricted free agent. The Nets balked last summer when Martin sought a contract extension for the maximum, so it's possible the Nuggets could make Martin an offer New Jersey won't match or get the Nets to agree to a sign and trade.

Dang it. I want Barry. Denver can't have him. I actually think KMart fits our needs at PF pretty well also, but I recognize it's harder to get him since he's restricted.

It sounds like Camby may be up for a new contract as well although I'm not quite sure about that. If he is, they won't be able to afford all three.

Nuggets and Jazz are going to be scary in a couple years if they make some significant signings this off-season.

If the Nuggets can pull it off, they could be title contenders soon. They have a great mix of veteran leaders and talented youngsters.

I'm almost positive that we'll be watching Denver deep in the playoffs for a long time. They're just an amazing organization. They get the job done with trades, drafting and free agents.

Even we lost out on McDyess in 98 when we got Pippen instead. Players seem to like it there....well, except for one guy. ;)

Amazing organization? That's high praise for a team that hasn't been in the playoffs in 9 years.

I think its more a credit to Carmelo Anthony than anything else. Without him, I don't think we'd even be having this conversation.

    2 things

    1. Isn't it illegal for Jon to talk to Brent while under contract with the Sonics

    2. Jon Barry has a cervical strain........ how the hell did he strain his cervix... a tough child birth i guess :D

I'm with Sam, would love to have Kmart and Brent on the rockets team, Kmart would be such a massive upgrade over our current PFs, and Brent would be a nice upgrade in BBall IQ.

question Sam - does Kenyon deserve max money and will he get it..... sign n trade look our only way if it was possible

It would be nice to have hope for our own team's future.

The only reason KMart would talk to Denver (or Utah) would be for leverage with the Nets. I don't see him going anywhere.

I actually have gotten to see K-mart quite a bit due to geographical proximity and like his game more than most do.

But anyway, is he a max- guy? I think in the Eastern Conference, the answer is yes, in the West, the answer is no.

That seems kind of like a cop-out, but it's the best answer as far as I'm concerned.

BTW, if Denver is pursuing Martin, does this mean that they have conceded that Tskitashvilli is a bust? If so, no wonder the guy sat behind Nachbar....

Denver appears poised to become a perrenial play off contender, without home seed. I think they'll wind up with a nice team, but they are likely to be one or two stars from being a great challenger.

How about trading for Mcdyess for Nene and Camby? Signing Andre Miller? Getting Barry who we we're all salivating over as a bench guy? Putting their team in the trendiest threads in the league? Not to mention the great pickup of Boykins and the drafting of Tskita, who could develop into a good player.

Kiki is doing an awesome job, has respect from people around the league, and a very good team for their age, but I guess if you want to look at the team before they changed EVERYTHING ABOUT THE TEAM then good point.

Kiki has done more with nothing than any other GM in the league. I just can't believe that Scott Layden was dumb enough to trade the pick that became Nene Hilario (when the Knicks have needed a real inside presence since Ewing left) and Cotton Camby for a up-on-bricks McDyess, who even though I like because he's a Bama man, is done. The days of his 40 inch vertical have gone the way of the passenger pigeon and domestic station wagons. Getting Carmelo was yet another coup for the Nuggets. With K-Mart and Brent Barry in the fold, they are seriously gearing up for more than just a one-and-done in the playoffs.

I know, I was talking about the previous 9 years of futility..they're on a good run in the short term, no doubt, but you can't call them an amazing organization until they actually have a winning season.

Like I said before, if Detroit drafts Carmelo (already their best player), I don't think anybody's tallking about playoffs for denver this season.

Time will tell, everybody thought they were a great young team on the rise in 1995....then look what happened!
