    Another promise from Anthony: playoffs
By Aaron J. Lopez, Rocky Mountain News
    November 10, 2004

Give the Denver Nuggets this: They just might be the most confident 1-4 team in the NBA.

Either that or they are in deep denial.

still got 77 games plus the playoffs," forward Carmelo Anthony said after Denver's 108-88 loss to the Seattle SuperSonics on Tuesday night. "We will make the playoffs this year."

Anthony delivered a similar guarantee as a rookie last season, but it came in a much different context.

At the time, the Nuggets were in the thick of the playoff chase and playing well enough to give his bark some bite.

This time, Denver has taken up residence at the bottom of the Northwest Division standings after four double-digit losses.

"We just look real good on paper right now, but we're going to be fine, I promise you that," veteran Bryon Russell said. "We just have to continue to work. Next week, you'll be asking us, 'How did you turn things around so fast?' "

With 77 games remaining, the Nuggets have time on their side, but the same can't be said about history.

Since joining the NBA in 1976, no Denver team has made the playoffs after losing at least four of its first five games.

"I really don't know what to say about it, but it's getting ugly," Anthony said. "We've got to find a way to get through it and move forward because we're moving backwards right now."

Denver needs to unload Nene for some shooting, which they are severly lacking.

If im Denver, Im on the phone with Milwaukee talking about a Nene/Redd swap.

You think Milwaukee would pull the trigger on that deal? Nene has been an underachiever ever since he joined the league and Milwaukee has NO reason to let go of a great player like Redd.

You know, I liked Carmelo last year, but after the olympics he's gone far down in my book. He seems to be leaning toward the egotistical self-centered "it's my team" approach, ala Kobe, instead of caring about the team as a whole.

He needs to just shut his mouth, and let the results speak for themselves. All these "promising playoffs' and guaranteed victories are starting to get old...just play!

Except Kobe has the game to back up his ego much moreso than Carmelo.

He's definitely trying too hard right now and totally ignoring his teammates. He's not even at the talent level yet to be not trusting his teammates. I'm sure kenyon is kicking himself in head right now wondering why he went to denver. Then again...that money i'm sure helps him sleep at night.

Heard this on the radio, he is sulking again about nobody love him and that people are putting all the blame on him for the team's current failure.

Yes, we know it's not ALL your fault, but if you want to be a leader... LEAD!!!

I've yet to find a thing to like about him.

Why isn't it ALL his fault? he is the one taking 78 trillion shots a game, yet only making 1% of them.

I think Denver is a team that we should be able to eat alive. We should dominate teams without a single outside shooter. We should only lose to them if we're playing the 4th game in 5 nights in Denver.

the thing is denver isn't just losing they're getting slaughtered. that might be excusable when it's the lakers and jazz doing it, but the friggin sonics? a really bad team (spurs blowout notwithstanding). i mean, at least be competitive. who would've thought their only win would be against the twolves. and even that took OT.

I wonder why the Nugs are losing too? On Paper they look great but I guess there is only one ball and it seems everyone needs their hands on it.

Melo seems like a Magette to me.. all he can do is score and not much else.. he doesnt lead his team he doesnt defend. Too much of a one dimensional player for my taste.

This is the exact same crap that almost cost the Nuggets the playoffs last year. They were about 10 or so games up on Utah for the 8th spot when all hell broke loose on the Nuggets bench. Anthony began his sulking attitude. Next thing you know the Nuggets start losing game after game and the Jazz find themselves right behind.

Maybe it's best to get this out of the way, then they can right the ship. If anything, losing early in the season does nothing to hinder how you finish it. UNLESS you don't figure out what is wrong and actually do anything to fix it.

Anyone else think that its sad that he's promising that they won't be a lottery team? Aren't they supposed to be fighting for a top 4 seed?

I just wonder, out of all the people that got so mad that he wasn't ROY, how many still feel Melo is a notch above LeBron? I don't think you can even consider the two on par (not that I ever did).

    Anthony after 5 games:
    31% FG, 21% 3Pt, 67% FT, 3.8 TO, 2.4 Ast, 7.4 RPG, 16.6 PPG

If you're counting, that's a 0.6 A/T ratio, his rating has plummeted in half, from 86 to 43. Owch.

Hes soo not on my fantasy team ;)

BUT your right last year all i could do was praise this guy & i was one of the people pulling 4 Melo to get the ROY. MAN WAS I WRONG! He is a egotistical player that need to get b**** slapped... I mean 31% u'd think he would pass the ball around more

Melo will be fine. The dude isn't even 20 yet. How good was T-mac or Lobe when they were 20. At least melo has some fire and a competitive spirit.

I can't believe Melo's stock has gone down just because of Larry "F*cking" Brown. The kid was one of the best players during the olympic tune up and Larry Brown benches him because he doesn't like his personality. Who is the one being unprofessional?

My bad, but that doesn't really change the point I was trying to make. The kid will be one of the best players in the league when he figures it out. How many other players not named Lebron is the focus of their offense at the age of 20.
