Thomas helps rescue man from car fire
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears running back Anthony Thomas helped pull a man from a burning car.

The 2001 rookie of the year was on his way to visit teammate David Terrell late Sunday when he saw a smoldering car on the road.

"The car was smoking at first, but it wasn't really on fire,'' Thomas said. "But when I got there and I pulled over, it sounded like, 'Boom,' and then a tire popped and a big fire blew out.

"When you see a car fire you never know if it's going to blow up or not. So the main thing, I was trying to get the guy away from the car and get me and my wife away from the car.''

No one was injured. The police said Monday their report on the incident was not available.

The Bears had a bye Sunday and play Detroit this week.

"Good time to have a bye week, I guess,'' Bears coach Dick Jauron said. "I'm glad I gave him the time off. He was in the right place at the right time.

"It doesn't surprise me. He's really a solid person. That's a great story.''

After Terrell found out what happened, he was quick to tell the tale at Halas Hall on Monday.

"We've got a super hero on the team now,'' Terrell said

Forget the Randy Moss, Allen Iverson, Marcus Fizer, and Latrell Sprewell stories that plague the papers everyday... I want more coverage of this type of behavior!

I think I may have a new favorite player. :)

I had contemplated posting this under the title "A-Train Pulls Man From Burnig Car." But I didn't feel like getting a warning from "The Man," DofD, telling me not to use deceptive thread titles.

I know what you mean. I do wish there were more stories like this. After this, my opinion of AT has just improved greatly. Good to see some heroes as well.

The most bittersweet story I read was about a week ago in McClain's Q&A's regarding a RB from Kansas City who saved two children from drowning in a lake. The player couldn't swim and lost his life. This happened about 20 years ago (?).

Great stuff!!! I also would like to hear more stories of athletes donating time and money to people who need it. Teminally ill people/children, cancer patients, homeless people, etc....

Do any of those Beyond the Glory episodes have any of that? The only one I ever watched was Hakeem's. It was probably the lowest rated one they ever had, mainly because there were no stories about sex, drugs or arrests.

I here about this stuff pretty often. From Charity events like Zo's Summer Groove and Iverson's Charity Softball game, there are stories like T-Mac sending a get well video and a signed jersey to the kid who was shot by the sniper in Maryland. Cat just started a charity, Mo brings kids to the game, Steve and Cat buy things like vans for Calvin Murphy's charity. Craig Biggio and the Sunshine Kids. I could go on and on about what just Houston athletes do, know that there are similar guys in all sports around the country. These stories just don't get much attention from the Media. I found out about Cat's event at the Rockets website, not at ESPN which is where many of us get our sports news.

Most of the "Beyond the Glory" detail how an athlete started out coming from nothing, built themselves into a great professional athlete, went overboard on a vice (sex/drugs/alcohol/money), and overcame their bad habits to live a clean and pure life from there on after...

This should be worth at least two, or three touchdowns this week for Thomas in fantasy football.

Charles Barkley visited children's hospital wards in Philadelphie while a player there. He visted on holidays with the big one Christmas Day. He brought presents and autographed memorabilia. I read about it in a Catholic Charities magazine in the late 80's. He also brought along some other sports figures- Jim Leyman -His coach I think, and maybe Dr. J and Moses Malone.

Keep in mind this was terminally ill kids- a tragic and noble thing...

How are all these stories not headlines? This stuff does not happen every day. I am sick of the Randy Moss sprays gatorade on the official type of stuff.
