Will we see a defection of YOFs?

Should Clutch send a "sorry" or "thank you" or "hahah you suckers" card to the fanboard of whichever team drafts Yi?

How long before we start using phrases like "my Chinese guy can beat up your Chinese guy"?

    or

"Yao's momma makes better chow mein than Yi's momma"

    keep em coming

Nice...I nominate this as XENOPHOBE thread of the year!

Why don't you just tell Yao and all his fans to go back to China since that's what you seem to really imply.

Yi is good but I dont know if he has the same following that Yao had when he came here.

I wonder if all the black people will stop watching the Rockets black guys when other black guys are drafted. They can have arguments like "My black guy's momma makes better collards than your black guy's momma."

Sounds pretty damn stupid, doesn't it? Guess why? Because, like the Chinese generalizations made above, it is.

hey all I know is, there's a strong Yi Camp and an equally strong Yao camp.

Then say that. Talk about that. Don't use racially driven generalizations to make your point.

I really don't think it was all out of line. I'm guessing the vast majority of YOFs and the future YIFs are Chinese. Plus, isn't hotballa of Chinese ancestry himself?

Jeff's got a point, I guess. I think it was the chow mein line that some people found offensive, I shoulda just said momma's cooking. Apparently noone actually eats chow mein in China.

It's not just about the chow mein thing. Imagine when the second black player entered the ML, someone said, "I wonder if all the Jackie Robinson only fans will defect, and how long before we start saying 'my black guy beat up your black guy'?"

well thats not really a racial generalization. the Yi and Yao camps are pretty divided from what I know.

Again, I'm not really seeing how that's such a terrible thing to think might happen. If the internets were around when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, I could see something similar happen.

Or let's say that an African-American driver started winning NASCAR races and, in turn, more African-Americans started watching the sport and rooting for that driver. If there was all of the sudden another very good African-American driver that burst onto the scene, it'd be natural to wonder if those fans would breakaway and start rooting for that driver or if they would root for both.

I am guessing if Yi turns out to be as good a player as Yao is, he will have a bigger following. I think he plays a 'sexier' style of basketball and it would be the equivalent of the Chinese T-Mac. I think Yao would lose some of his popularity because he's a center and from what I understand a good chunk of Chinese fans are more interested in the Iversons and T-Macs and Kobes, in terms of style at least.

Yi sounds very promising, I am really intrigued by him. I saw him play a few times and he's 'fluid', seems to be very talented as well. His game has the type of 'grace' that you see with guys like T-Mac and Kobe. So yes, I do imagine he will have a large following, but he has to be as good as Yao first to even be in the conversation.

I feel more sorry for the team that drafts the Black guy. You wouldn't want those Black fans showing up supporting your team.

Yah, it was definetly the chow mein that made it racist.
