why les alexander took yao. Other than he will make him a lot of money it puts the rockets on the map. There are some NBA teams that are never going to be big time so to speak. And some teams like the lakers celtics and knicks are. Whether or not Yao would have turned out to be a good player or not he had the potential to make us like one of those teams that you recognize without even thinking. I think ultimately that is the metal mind set the organization had when bringing Yao in, to make the Rockets one of those teams that gets the good free agents, one of those teams that players feel like they are coming somewhere where they can feel special to put the jersey on. I hope i make my point clear. I just wanted to add this flame me if you want but im bored.
That plus there were no other players that were worth drafting. Looking at No.2 Jay Williams and No. 3 Mike Dunleavy it was a no-brainer as it was a pretty poor draft.
What are you talking about? It has taken you this long to figure out why we drafted Yao? Simply put, he is a great player. Of course they were going to draft him.
I think you should take a look on the player name of YAO's draft year before submit this type of meaningless post...
Kwame Brown was the #1 pick the year before. Nobody was going to pick a high schooler before Yao! In retrospect, Amare should have been the 1st or 2nd pick of that draft.
In 02, Yao was finally allowed to come to the NBA, one year after the infamous big man draft. It was also the year before one of the greatest drafts of all time. Yao was the obvious #1 pick. In 01 and 03, not so obvious. The Rockets landed the #1 pick with a chance of .063. Stern wanted Yao to end up in Houston. He wanted to officiate Yao Ming differntly. He didn't want him to lead the league in scoring. The NBA is about talent, not height. Yao is in a ****ing wheel chair. He is very talented, and very tall. He has the most coordination/inch ratio on this planet. He is the best offensive player in the NBA.
Jay Williams would have been a better player than Yao Ming if he would have never got on that motorcycle... He was a Chris Paul/Deron Williams level PG... That being said... Yao was a great pick...
Although the accident was quite tragic, I'm not sure Jay Williams would've panned out a.la Chris Paul and Deron Williams in the NBA.
Yao was not selected for face recognition. There is always a risk with the number 1 pick, and especially with players from a foreign background. They chose him because they felt he was the number 1 player and our need for a center. Amare was much faster, explosive and stronger too. Jay Williams was a good player, but he struggled a great deal at the 1 and only showed flashes of his talent before he got injured, unlike Paul or Deron. Time has shown that Yao was the best player in the draft,Amare is talented but lazy. Unfortunately, Yao's injuries have limited his impact. That risk was always there with his height and the Rockets knew it. I think the gamble partially paid off.
Yeah, laughable if you dont have a brain. When Yao is on he can not be stopped.....Heck who can even reach his hook shot? He makes Howard look like a fool eveytime they play.....
Yea too bad we didn't get one of those other big men that were first picks like Andrea Bargnani, Kwame Brown, Michael Olowokandi, Greg Oden, Andrew Bogut, or Kenyon Martin. Those guys are real superstars.
The big mistake is that you speak as though Yao Ming had been a failure and that his period of effectivenes was over. Not only did he have the potential but he still has it and may even come back better than ever before.
