Just heard, hasn't been leaked to ESPN yet.. Supposed to be a press release tonight around 9, which is after the Cincinnati football players team banquet. I'll update with a link when it comes out. Thoughts? Kelly's been great at Cincinnati.. but coaching for Notre Dame is a different ball game. Is he Charlie Weis-lite, or will he turn the program around? UPDATE 2: Official. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4732205 UPDATE: Kelly bans media from banquet to talk to team privately about ND. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4731918
Seems like a distinguished list of coaches who've done well elsewhere, but haven't been able to turn around ND.
I wonder if this news will affect Cincy's performance in the Sugar Bowl, knowing their coach is leaving next season?
I see why you leave Cincy. It's ultimately a basketball school with too much football competition in-state. However, I have no idea why anyone would want to coach at ND anymore. (Yes, I realize he'll make a ton of money. There will be other opportunities for Kelly to make that much -- or more -- coaching elsewhere.)
I think Notre Dame is the toughest coaching job in college. And I also think that's whats attractive; it appeals to coaches with egos - to take on the toughest coaching job and win national championships.
Cincy is never going to be taken seriously as a national title contender and unless they always win the Big East it may be difficult forthem to get into the BCS while a 2 loss ND team is always going to be in the BCS. If Kelly manages to succeed at ND, ESPN would remind everyone of that on a daily basis.
I don't see any reason why Cincinnati should be a better job than Notre Dame. The reason ND has been worse than Cinci the past few years is because of the coaches in place at either school.
They should have given Weis more time. Weis had highly ranked recruiting classes his last few years and a turnaround was just a matter of time. At least they should have given Weis another year so that Clausen and Tate could have stuck around.
i'm curious as to what fans are going to expect next year from the team. are they still going to want at least 9 wins? gonna be a brutal first year for whoever coaches em.
Why is ND a bad job all of a sudden? They can still get top talent, are always on TV, will always get a bowl game if they don't suck and the coach makes a killing.
They don't get top talent, they are in a cold area, tons of schools are always on TV now, they have lost that copmetitive advantage. And most guys from Urban areas don't want to go to Notre Dame anymore when there are better options for them. Notre Dame will never get it's mojo back. DD
Tate and Clausen would have (certainly should have) gone to the NFL anyway. Uncapped season coming up and a potential work-stoppage the following year.
Don't know much about this guy up until this season, that being said he seems to be about the best fit for the job. I thought the same thing about Willingham but in retrospect Willingham didn't have the personality to be coaching at such a high profile school. he just wasn't media friendly. Charlie Weiss obviously isn't mr. sunshine but being an alum helped him overcome that. from what i've seen of Kelly throughout all this speculation of him leaving his current school, he seems to be able to handle as best you could. [sidenote]i hate how the sports media gets upset when these guys won't say if they are leaving but at the same time get upset if the speculation becomes a "distraction" to their current jobs[/sidenote]
I agree. Florida, Miami, Texas, LSU, USC, etc all have much to offer away from the football field. Also, ND has a more restrictive "education" requirement, I believe.
This. ND will have to lower admissions standards to get top athletic talent to come to freaking Indiana. It would also help if they had top female "talent" on hand to convince the players to come to ND. Who gives a crap about the legacy of Notre Dame if you're a top notch athlete of 18-19 years old from CA,FL, or TX? Only Grandpa Schmoe who went to Notre Dame in the 1940s can't understand why the don't win national championships anymore.
