This is very secondary to the awesome win last night, but was anyone else surprised to see Langhi playing the 2 guard spot? Obviously, we are already crowded at the 2, but think about the mismatches he would have at that position.
He was only guarding Crotty, but did pretty well. The only time he lost him was when Utah ran him around picks. It would be interesting to see him defend against some of the better, quicker 2's. He posted Crotty up once and drew a foul.
Still seems strange that while our 2 spot is set and our 3 is the shakiest position that Rudy gives him minutes at the 2.

Gosh, I didn't think the topic was that lame. I'll settle for a "pity" reply.

J/K. Start some posts like this next season when I have my dish and I'll respond. I have no way of watching the game, but if what you said is true, then that would be a freakish team indeed. A 7 footer in your backcourt.

I don't know if Crotty is the barometer by which we can measure the success of the "experiment" as you call it, but you did say he kept up with him.

My question to you (and to keep one of the few threads in here with some insight alive) when did Langhi start playing the 2 during the game? Was it in garbage minutes? Oh wait... that would've been pretty much the whole game.

How about who else was on the court when Langhi was in at the 2?

What did Utah's lineup look like when he was at the 2?

When the ball switched sides, who picked up Langhi or did Crotty attempt to guard him? If he did attempt to guard him, did you notice any plays being run down low for Langhi to post up?

dod, I was actually amazed when I noticed that Dream, Walt, Bullard, Langhi and Mooch were playing.

What a weird night... Dream playing 'garbage' minutes in the fourth. How weird. I guess you could have a worse 2nd team than having the most influential, most revolutionary Center of all time holding down the fort.

    Moe,

With the Rockets being close scorewise in most games this season and a playoff push still ongoing, Rudy has lacked situations to experiment and see what he has sitting at the end of the bench.

Defensively, he would have a struggle covering guards such as: Kobe, Iverson and Spree. Since the rest of the league has the same problem, it isn't important to consider that level of guard play. As long as he could keep up with the middle tier of guards, he could probably do it.

ps Moe, consider using a hotter thread title next time to generate more fire for your topic.

Thank you, thank you. I was about to throw myself under the wheels of the nearest haywagon.

Langhi played the last 7 minutes of the game. The rest of the lineup, as I recall, was Mooch, Walt, Bull and Hakeem, I think. The Rocks did run one or maybe two post-up plays for him. Crotty did try to guard him. Utah had their bench in. Vaughn, Crotty, Lewis, Padgett and I don't remember the other position.

Mango, how about "Langhi Should Start in Front of Cat"?

    Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket.

    BTW, everybody, that's a joke!

You know, everyone was so high on Langhi before the season started and now it's as if all the potential everyone was raving about never existed. Obviously, some of us were hoping he'd have an impact this year, and the fact that he hasn't is certainly something to consider, but for those who believed before, is there any reason not to still believe now that Langhi could be our future starting SF?

I think Langhi can be our starting SF. Maybe not at the beginning of next season, but quite possibly by the season after. The way I look at it, we want a guy at SF who can hit the spot-up 3, play some defense, run with the team, maybe grab a few boards, and just work in the flow with the other guys. I see no reason why Langhi can't do all of that. What do you guys think? He seems like he'd be quick enough to guard most 3s. Many people around here are still pining after Rashard. I know Langhi's not developed and has a long way to go, but I'm not convinced that Langhi can't be both a better player than Rashard and better for the Rockets in the long run. What do you guys think? What are your reasons why or why not Langhi can't be our solution at the 3?

To be our future sf he needs to lift a weight once in a while and to get off that Famine diet.

I don't know if this will answer your question but, once a player has been selected, I generally evaluate draft picks in one of two ways:

    1) What specific player will this player replace on the roster?

For example, a case might be made that Langhi would follow in the footsteps of C Rodgers, start playing at the 3 and later play the other front court positions as well, with some time as a 5. The idea might be for him to add his outside shooting to a player filling Rodgers shoes.

    2) What specific player is the GM trying to "get back" by selecting him?

For example, some might say he resembles R Horry in the way he shoots and goes to the hoop. The GM may simply have wanted another R Horry in the lineup. In which case, he might end up at the 4 someday.

Either way, I think Mr. Langhi will go through a season or so trying to "find" his position, be it at the 3 or somewhere else. I haven't seen enough of his play to know if he will succeed at the 3 or not and that is why I, in my own fashion, continue to evaluate him as a pick rather than as a player. Which could be a rather fine distinction for most people.

The question I really have is whether or not he will remain on the roster? We will likely have two first round picks and, if you count the IL, we carry thirteen players plus Colson right now. Langhi is getting precious little playing time to prove himself. I do think he may have showed up for camp out of shape and that is how he got shin splints just before the season began. I feel this summer will be a challenge for him to keep his place on the roster.

I just wish we would get a chance to really see what he can do. Best of luck to Lanky.

Add 10-15 pounds to play the 3.
Add 30 pounds to play the 4.
Add 40-45 pounds to play the 5.

Adding 40 pounds to Dan is just expecting too much.

Mango is being very nice to Dan also. If I were a coach and my GM drafted Dan to one day play the 4-5 slots I would require Dan put on at least 50-60lbs.

Langhi at the 5? Is that a joke? I don't mean to be disrespectful win14me, but to suggest that Langhi could be a 5 is ludicrous.

Davo, I think Langhi playing the 5 would be almost as ludicrous as Bullard playing the 5. Rudy would never consider such a ... oh, wait, never mind. [IMG]
