According to Bob Wolfley, if you're Rudy Tomjanovich, if you're the Houston Rockets, don't you have to be scared to death about making Yao Ming the first pick in the draft?

This is more pressure than annually goes to the team with the first pick in the draft. There is a sense that the Rockets can't afford not to take him.

Yao, the consensus opinion seems to be, is too big to avoid

But you can pose in the press all you want. You can exude all the supreme assurance and confidence in your ability to divine the potential of another Ming Dynasty.

But the fact is Yao Ming is 7 feet 5 inches, but he's not a shot-blocker.

    Think hard about that.

He's 7-5 and does all these other wonderful things for someone his size: dribble, take the perimeter jump shot, run the floor, pass, score.

    But he's not a shot-blocker.

If the security sirens aren't sounding around chez Rockets because of that, then they need a new security firm.

If Yao is not a shot-blocker, then he's not going to be a dominating, game-altering defender or rebounder. What's the point of being 7-5 on this planet if you are not going to be a shot-blocker, defender and rebounder?

Guarantee you Shaquille O'Neal is not losing sleep worrying about how he's going to check Yao Ming. Yet, the Rockets are poised to draft him in hopes of getting past O'Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers in future playoff rounds.

If you had to predict where Yao will be five years from now in the National Basketball Association, it's easier to mount the argument he'll be closer to being Kent Benson or Pervis Ellison or Ralph Sampson than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Hakeem Olajuwon.

    If you're 7-5 and you're not a shot-blocker or a game-altering defender, then what are you?

A bust from a would-be Ming Dynasty is what you are.

Seems like the points they make are agreeable...i just dont know if the gamble and ALL THE HASSEL is worth it...and then finding out he is the biggest bust in NBA history.

But he IS a shotblocker, so the entire premise of the argument is invalid. Next...

that's about as dumb an article as i've ever read. that was shockingly awful. i mean if you don't think ming is the right pick, fine, but that's the best argument he had? do people get paid for that crap? it doesn't present any facts, it doesn't even show his shot-blocking numbers. i guess because that would show he is in fact a shotblocker.

Totally r****ded. Almost as bad as suggesting we put Cat, Francis, and JWill on the floor at the same time.

This would be a good take on Jim Rome:

Yao Ming is NOT a shot blocker!!!!!!!

Who cares what the others think? I remember them saying the same thing about Gasol. They will change their tune as soon as they see him dominate!

Did anybody miss the fact that this guy is 7'5"? Just STANDING there with his arms in the air would make even Shaq change his shot.

The only problem with Ming is his government.

Some one has already started a thread refering to this article before... and as I said earlier, his writer almost makes me laugh.

Ming blocked more shots than anyone at the Olympics except Mourning when he was only 19. He led and averaged 4.8 blocks in the CBA last year.

Not saying he has all kinds of shot-blocking abilities, but he is atleast decent, and at his height he would block more shots with his face than most NBA players with their hands.

If he doesn't think Yao fits the Rocket team, fine, but please give valid reason/s to support your argument. Saying he is not a shot blocker without anything to back it up is just lame, and yes, laughable.

i think ming stps up as the opponents get better. Like in the olymics. He wants to be great so he will, he's got a good head on his shoulders.

He is 7'6 1/4 with shoes on.

He only needs to grow one more inch or sneakers with higher platforms to dunk on his tip-toes!

And if anyone still think he is not a shot-blocker at all, please take a look at this video if you haven't yet

    More Yao Video Footage

It is too strange. Where this "not shot blocker" first came from?

Shot block will be the first thing that Yao Ming can contribute to Rockets right away. Let's watch his first game.

But I think Ming's problem is turnover. He passes too much when he was under 20.

I am wasting my life reading and writing all these.

the very first thing I heard people said about Yao Ming was his shot-blocking ability. Now Danny Anige said Yao is not a shot blocker. This Bob Wolfley dude also said Yao is not a shot blocker. What's going on? Im confused!!!

So is everybody else. Nobody seems to know what YAo can do unless they've been to China. Trust the people who have gone there to see him play.

I met Mark Eaton in a Dallas hotel elevator. He is the biggest person I have ever seen. He had to slouch just to keep his head from going through the roof. I was in awe he was HUGE. He was also a very nice and engaging guy. I think he could tell I was in shock so he started a conversation with my freind and me. I actually forgot about that until I read your post.
