Anyone else have trouble getting up? Trouble waking up? Trouble adjusting to the rest of the world's biological clock? I always have to teach a class or (worse) play music at something like 9 in the morning. It usually requires a lot of coffee and/or energy drinks, which still don't always take effect in time. I can physically get up and walk around, drive, do written work, but I'm obviously a zombie. Everyone else is perky and having normal conversations, which I can't do until later in the day. And I know there's no use complaining about it when a lot of people have to be at work at 7 or 8 every day. How do you guys do it? Is there any way we can ever teach the morning people of the world to sleep in?
I hate mornings a lot. Usually takes me a few hours to function normally. I have 9 AM Classes, I get up at 8, then I sit through class barely awake, 2 hours later I wake up the way back home before I can go back to bed.
I've never been a morning person, although I get up everyday at about 5am. Of course, having a little one has ensured that even on the weekends, Ill be waking up at 5am regardless. I compenstate by taking a later afternoon, early evening nap. Naps rock.
Wake up, take a shower and my wife usually has my coffee ready. Im usually okay for the whole day unless Im sick. I have kids so they keep me going until they go to sleep. I wish I had time for a nap.
I usually wake up at around 6 during the week and I'm in a fairly good mood except for Mondays. Mondays I just have a look of total disgust on my face and I don't want to talk or listen to anybody. I sit and think about how much I hate waking up this early to work for the man and I need to go rob a bank or something. Usually after a few cups of coffee I'm ok though. I wish I could take naps, but it is just impossible for me to fall asleep during the day. My wife does it all the time on the weekends and it pisses me off.
I have always been a morning person. Very weird for a musician. On weeknights, when I have no plans, I am in bed and asleep by 9-9:30 PM, and then wakeup at 3:30 AM and in the gym at 4:00AM. Even on some gig nights, if I am in bed around 2AM, I am up at 7AM the next morning. The only way I can sleep late is if I stay up partying heartily until about 4:00 AM.
Thats funny. It pisses my wife off when I take naps. She just refuses to do so. She tells me that naps are for 2 year olds.
That's been happening to me too. Today I could take a nap between 12-2, but if I try it I'll probably just get there and not be able to. Probably delayed effect of caffeine or something. I can take them late at night, but usually then I need to be doing work.
http://www.stanford.edu/~dement/early.html EARLY BIRD OR NIGHT OWL? Rochester, MN (September 15, 1998) -- according to a study published in the latest issue of the journal SLEEP , there may be a genetic reason why some people seem to be “night owls” and other “early birds.” Researchers from Stanford University and the University of Wisconsin have identified a mutation on a gene that seems to be and indicator for what they call “morningness-eveningness,” or a person’s preferred time of day for doing things. CLOCK GENE DETERMINES MORNING OR EVENING PREFERENCE Researchers studied 410 adults in this study. The subjects were given a questionnaire designed to determine the time of the day at which they preferred doing certain tasks. This questionnaire, named the Horne-Ostberg questionnaire in honor of its developers, has been used by researchers for almost 20 years. By totaling their Horne-Ostberg scores, researchers were able to determine whether the subjects prefers the morning or the evening. At the same time, the researchers studied one particular gene, called the CLOCK gene, in each of the subjects. When the researchers compared the results, they found that subjects with a specific variation of CLOCK gene were most likely “evening people.” According to one of the study’s authors, Dr. Emmanuel Mignot, the study refers to circadian rhythms, or a person’s internal clock. This internal clock controls behaviors like sleeping and waking, and is tied to the 24-hour daily dark-light cycle. SOME PEOPLE HAVE SLIGHTLY ALTERED CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS Prior to the study, researchers had already identified several genes that seem to regulate human circadian rhythms. But this study confirms what researchers had suspected: that people with a specific variation of CLOCK gene have slightly altered circadian rhythms. “People with altered circadian rhythms may not be ready to go to bed when society tells them to. And they may be getting out of bed too early or too late,” explained Mignot. RESEARCHERS HOPE WORKERS OF THE FUTURE WILL ADJUST SCHEDULES The researchers hope that some day, humans may be able to test their genetic make-up to determine their healthiest schedule. Genetic reasons may explain why some people aren’t productive workers at 8:00 a.m., and why others aren©ˆt productive at 4:30 p.m. Ideally, Mignot says, “workers of the future will be able to adjust their schedules so as to optimize the time they spend at work.” MAY EXPLAIN WHY CERTAIN PEOPLE SUFFER INSOMNIA Mignot says that this finding is also an important discovery in the field of sleep disorders, because it may explain why certain people suffer from insomnia. “If a person’s internal clock is telling them that they should be going to bed at 1:30 in the morning, it’s no wonder the person can’t get to sleep when they go to bed at 10:30 at night,” he said. Mignot emphasized that this is the first study to find a relationship between these circadian genes and morningness-eveningness tendencies. The results need to be replicated in order for researchers to confirm their findings.
I HATE mornings!. It is difficult for me to wake up...and once I do, Im not a normal person for at least a hour or two. I dont drink coffee...so it takes at least 2 vanilla cokes before I have enough snap in my brain to even function somewhat normally. I could go to sleep at 10p, and I would still be this way...unfortunately, with the amount of school work I have these days...it seems I cant get to sleep before 1 or 2a...which is a real pisser since I have to be at work and functioning by 7a. ugh... I loved the rock lifestyle....not having to work until at least noon on bad days...and sometimes much later depending on where we were setting up at. Of course, I didnt get to bed until the sun was coming up so I guess there is a tradeoff in every situation.
Ferdinand doesn't even go to bed until later than that. I don't naturally want to go to bed until 1:00 at least, and then I'm taking care of whatever I didn't get done until 2:00. Then I just sleep off and on in random places... the lights and everything are still on and everyone else in the house is awake like it's the middle of the day. Well, some of us have to get up at a certain time. Our sleep only overlaps 3-4 hours. ...though it was funny when he had to work a 7 a.m. shift the other day. He tried to sleep properly beforehand but lay awake most of the night. (Well I wonder why.)
I also hate the early morning hours. I get up at 7:00 and I would feel tired and takes a while to adjust. Its wierd b/c no matter how early I go to bed the affect would still feel the same in the morning. So I dont really have a set time for bed, just go to bed when I feel tire...like between 10:00 and 12:00. On weekends when I'm off its fine since I dont get up until 10:00 and I feel like I have a lot of energy.
I have problem waking up too. It takes me quite a while to get adjust ed. If I have to wake up really early in the morning, I would usually choose to simple not sleep the night before, I usually have a heighten sense of awareness the morning after that sleepless night. However, this is definitely not a regular solution. I think the cause of this trouble of waking up has to do with slow blood circulation. Therefore, the blood doesn't reach the brain adequately at first and causes the slight dizziness and lack of concentration. So, one solution I propose is to do cardiomuscular exercise to increase the heart muscle. Maybe that would make the heart pumps faster.
I hate the mornings, but I don't get physically affected by it. I think it's all mental with me. When I was living on campus, we had these dark blinds and only one window for the dorm room, so I could sleep all day if I didn't have an alarm clock. In my apartment, I have two windows in my bedroom and the sunlight just pours in through these white blinds. I'm up as soon as the sun hits me. I hate being up early, but I don't feel like a zombie or anything. Once I'm up, I'm up, but I could easily go right back to bed and skip class. I guess I'm just lazy.
Hang a dark curtain or piece of fabric in front of the window. (I do it in my bedroom.) We can't have those mornings coming in and ruining our sleep.
I like being up early, I just hate waking up. Luckily, I have a job that allows me to sleep whenever the hell I want.
I'm not particularly a morning person, but when I have to get up early and haven't slept enough, I'll still be okay initially. Then, four hours later, it'll hit me like a ton of bricks.
I am naturally a morning person. On weeknights, I go to bed at 9:30pm and wake up at 4:30am to workout at the gym before work. On weekends I go to bed around 1am and naturally wake up at 6am to go work out at the gym. I love morning... hate evenings and HATE late nights.
During the weekdays I go to sleep at around 2:00-2:30am, wake up around 5:30-6:30am. I never oversleep and never hit the snooze button on my alarm. I gave up coffee and most caffeinated drinks and for some reason, I'm more alert without all that caffeine than with. I sit around guys that chug Dr. Pepper and coffee all day and they come in dragging and are falling asleep by the end of the day. Maybe the key to being a morning person is to give up caffeine.
