I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like like I had a bunch of that really runny snot in my nose (you know, the stuff that's like water). I ran to the bathroom, which is when I realized that I actually had a pretty bad nosebleed. I managed to stop it after a little while by applying pressure to the bridge of my nose and lying down, so the blood wasn't coming from my sinuses or anything. I don't know if I should be worried about this or not. I've had a cold for the past few days, so I can certainly understand those tissues being irritated, and it's plausible that the combination of them drying out at night and then getting bumped or something could cause it. It just kind of freaked me out because you wake up and then you are losing blood! Does anybody know of any illnesses this could be potentially linked to? Or should I just forget about it?
I don't think its anything to worry about and I think you answered your own question when you said your nose was dried out or maybe you bumped it or something. I get nose bleeds pretty often and I have got them in my sleep a few times. Nothing to be worried about unless it is something that keeps happening or gets worse.
GS, My wife's has nosebleeds every so often during the night. She also has really bad allergies. Usually they happen when we have the fan on high (in fact, every time we have had the fan on high she has had nosebleeds). She said its something about the wind in the room iritating the inside lining of her nose.
Thanks doctor bobrek. I was looking to see if some people have had similar experiences - I don't like running to emergency rooms/doctors over every little thing. Thanks for the replies everyone - I appreciate the feedback.
I gets nose bleeds after 4 day coke-a-thons, have you recently participated in any coke-a-thons? ~Dr Cson MD,PHD,BBS, BS
You said the following in your initial post: It just kind of freaked me out because you wake up and then you are losing blood! Does anybody know of any illnesses this could be potentially linked to? Or should I just forget about it? Cosidering you were freaked out, it sounded like this concerned you. Any health concerns should be handled by a physician. As to your question about illnesses and the nosebleed relationship, the following are some: Allergies Hypertension Respiritory infection Ear problems Common cold I apologize if you didn't appreciate the seriousness of my response.
Sorry I snapped at you bobrek. Thank you for your concern and the extra information. cson - 4 day coke-a-thon! LOL - I didn't get it until the second time I read it.
I get nosebleeds all the damn time. Usually caused by allergies and dryness, but also because of blood vessils being too close to the skin layer. I would suggest going to an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) Specialists who can carterize (sp?) your nose. You will have to get a reccomendation through your GP. It really helps out quite a bit though. Good luck.
