The Celtics've beated the Rockets twice in the NBA finals since Moses Molone's era. But seems nobody here ever hated Boston and Bird. Were they just simply a better team? No disrespect to the Rockets at all. I started following the Rockets since 94. So.. just curious about the history.
If you read this thread: http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58720 Didn't get much hits on it. So from this, we really don't give a **** about the Celtics.
I did hate the Celtics but that was a long time ago and I still hate Larry Bird. Bird could really hit his shots. I hate the Jazz and Lakers more. I guess everything has its time and place and the rivalry died down.
if you're a Rockets fan it's basically mandatory that you hate the Jazz, Suns, Lakers, and Spurs (hate the Spurs in that kind of "I wish they'd just shut up", kind of way).
They're eastern conference, so it's not like we really play them all that often. Personally, I think they suck, but I don't hate 'em like the Jazz, Sonics, Suns, Lakers, etc.
I remember both of those Celtics series - although I barely remember the 1981 series, but I cannot forget the 1986 series and Walton's three point shot late in game four that broke our backs and that irritating smirk on his face as he back peddled down the court to play defense. Also, I recall Sampson's fight with Jerry Sichting in game five and how we ended up winning that ugly game to eventually lose in six. At that time I did indeed hate the Celtics, and for many years thereafter. Sometimes reliving it makes my blood boil! I have developed a respect for Bird, but I still hate Kevin McHale, Danny Ainge, and Greg Kite - who I recall was only put in to commit his six fouls. But the rivalry has waned over the past 17 years. The Celtics have also not been the team they once were. These days, the Jazz and Lakers are higher on my list. The Sonics were on my list in the mid 1990s.
You can never hate such a great player like Bird. But for sure, I truly hate Walker, and Pierce. They are to controlling, always shooting 3s' while they have their teammates wide open. Oh, wait that's almost the same situation with Francis and Mobley. But not that much, atleast Francis passes the ball when his not shooting good. But Pierce and Walker don't stop. They could be on their worse shooting night and still keep shooting. That's wrong! pass the ball! No wonder they always got low score games.
Nice post, and great memories. I always thought Kevin McHale looked like the missing link who proved evolution happens.
I could be wrong, but didn't Larry Bird average a triple double in that finals series against the Rockets in '86? If that's true, that is f***ing amazing. I don't have any hatred for those Celtics (I was only 7 in '86) but I sure as hell don't like the Celtics of today. Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker are the epitomy of what is wrong with the players in the NBA today, two ball-hogging, shot jacking, me-me players. Paul Pierce is the reason the USA team did so poorly last summer.
I took hated that Celtics team but have grown to respect tham a ton since. Love Larry Bird. One of my all time favs. Liked Kevin McHale. He was "Mr. Fundamental" before Duncan was. Hated Ainge and Schisting. Dennis Johnson was a very solid player. The thing I hate most about the Celtics is that damn crappy court they had in the Garden. Ruined Ralph Sampson's career.
I'm moving to Boston in a few months so I kind of hope the Celts do well next year. Don't get me wrong.. I'm always first and foremost a Rockets fan, but I'd like my home team to be competitive as well. I think some of the Walker/Pierce bashing is warranted but I definitely feel like 'Toine is the worst offender. I actually really love Pierce because he has that killer instinct to take over a game. He's showed it many times throughout his career and not a lot of guys have that determination/fire (Jordan, Kobe, Reggie Miller, Dream).. That makes Pierce an exciting player to watch, imho.
I like the bulls the lakers the celts the rocks but i don't like the spurs.... i don't like the jazz.... wait i hate the jazz...... that rivalry will not die......
I hate Larry Bird and will always hate the Boston Celtics. I used to have a t-shirt that said "Melt the Celts" Wish I still had it..... probably worth some damn money.
