I find it interesting how all the headlines today are all about the Lakers and the end of their 3-peat. Funny how few people mention that the reason of the Lakers demise is the Spurs. Everyone just seems to be saying what went wrong for the Lakers and what are the Lakers going to do now. But nobody mentiones the Spurs. I know this is the whole media against Texas thing happening again. But ABC could have a nightmare if the Finals is a Spurs -Pistons match up. No matter who wins the championship this year, no respect will be given to them next year, ala 94 Rockets. Unless your team is from LA, Chicago or NY, nobody will ever give it respect
although it makes me ill, i find myself liking san antonio more and more. theyre just a great organization with a great coach and great well respected talent and an even brighter future. why cant i feel this way about the rockets lately? its troubling humble and hungry...
F the media and what they say. You don't mess with the state of Texas and get away with it. Oh and by the way the Lakers still suck.
i am sorry but i can't stand the Spurs. However, I really dig Tim Duncan (only bright side to the team). I hope Dallas wins. They are a soft team and their owner gets on my nerves sometimes, but they sure know how to put on a show. The Lakers are getting all the attetion is because they are the mighty Lakers who just lost for the first time in awhile. That is the kind of attentin you get when you win 3 in a row. We all know if they were in their regular callibur form they would have kicked The Spurs butt. Mavericks vs. Nets NBA Finals
All I know is both Rocket championship teams were better than these Spurs. And the Eastern Conference will get swept, AGAIN.
To be fair, it is generally considered a big deal when a sports dynasty falls... And when you've got two players who are such a huge part of the NBA's marketing strategy, what do you expect? I don't really understand why people hate the Spurs. Yeah, they can take the Rockets right now, but they've generally been a classy organization from what I remember. I think most Rockets fans would kill for a similar rebuilding path.
I don't like the Spurs, but its probably just out of the fact that I'm a Rockets fan so there is a natural dislike for the Spurs. Yeah, there is no reason to hate anyone on the Spurs, especially Duncan since he never seems to say anything anyway.
The Spurs outplayed the Lakers in every facet during the series. For that, they deserve mad props. But, c'mon: they're one of the most boring teams to watch. It's almost maddening to watch their style. It's like watching the Heat play if they had talent. Also, to be fair, it's not every day that the three-time defending champs lose. I think more has been made of the Lakers' inability instead of the Spurs' ability, but that's the sports media. The fall of a dynasty is always much more interesting than the rise of one (to sportswriters, anyway).
I would'nt say what you guys are saying that the Laker dynasty has fallen. I really believe they will win it again at least one more time in the next couple of years. Like every machine they need retooling, and they are a fine machine led by 2 great players. Their role players are getting old and they are probably going for some in the offseason. However, the Spurs will be there to give them a run for their money.
The only thing unclassy about the Spurs is their coach. The way he fired Hill was classless. Hill struggles with the team injuries and still manages to lead them to top notch records and the playoffs. But once Tim Duncan comes in, out goes Hill and Pop puts himself in charge. That was a low blow, and I will never like Pop as a result.
This is not a LA/Chicago/NY issue...when a 3 time defending champion loses, there are always going to be plenty of articles discussing their collapse. Even the Rockets had national attention brought to them when they lossed after 2 championships.
FranchiseBlade I too remember when Popabiotch did that and thought it was a low blow as well. Seems as if most people have forgot about that but I still remember very well. Hill has been jobless since then I believe.
I think it is a NY/LA/Chicago thing entirely. When Jordan retired, it was about the end of a dynasty. When he came back, it was all about how it could be that Jordan could play and not win a championship -- the concensus being that Jordan was still rusty and unfamiliar with his team. The next year, there was some talk about Houston stagnating a bit but the focus was all on the Jordanaires returning to the top. And then we had to put up with the ridiculous 'Last Dance' crap. In the Spurs championship year, everyone obviously knew Chicago wouldn't win, but it was all about NY's magical run and then, when they lost, about the asterisk because the season was short -- as if winning was somehow easier. And once Phil Jackson signed on with the Lakers, it was all anticipation of how he was going to bring all these championships to LA. Not that San Antonio was a dynasty, but LA even less so.
He is (or at least last year was) Coach of Fordham. I saw him getting a Fruitopia from a vending machine after a game once. A bit of a step down.
That's a bit of revisionist history. The true story is that Pop fires Hill after about 1/3rd of the season when the Spurs were doing poorly. He coached the rest of the season and they ended up in the lottery and Duncan came the following year with Pop already in charge as coach. The little known fact is that Hill was dumped because the players almost to a man couldn't stand Hill and came to Pop and said get him out of here or else. Pop never talked to the press about this and took the hit himself. And Hill? He's gone on to coach the powerhouse Fordham into an abysmal record and get tossed from that job as well, equally loved and respected after that tour of duty.
Of course the reason for the slow start was injury to David Robinson. Only 18 games had been played. Then David Robinson gets back and that's when Pop took over. Then he gets Tim Duncan. That was a low move by Pop
Didn't he hold Robinson out of the last wfew weeks to 'rest' him and get more ping pong balls too? I hate tanking.
