Given that Conoco is apparently out of this as well due to their merger with Phillips (though that isn't in the article), could this mean that the field has narrowed to Landry's Restaurants and Gallery Furniture??? Good, GOD, I hope we can do better than that!!!

Hewlett-Packard drops bid to put name on Astros Field
Associated Press

Hewlett-Packard Co. has pulled out as one of two finalists for acquiring the naming rights to Astros Field, formerly known as Enron Field.

Arch Currid, a spokesman for HP, told Houston television station KRIV on Tuesday that the company decided against the proposal.

"We were evaluating that opportunity," Currid said. "We made a decision that it wasn't the appropriate opportunity for us at this time. This is no reflection on the Astros or the wonderful opportunity it represents."

The Astros, hoping to distance themselves from the bankrupt Enron, agreed in February to buy out Enron's 30-year, $100 million naming rights deal for $2.1 million.

Since then, the Astros had fielded inquiries about the ballpark's name from at least three other companies, including Conoco, Landry's Seafood Restaurants and Gallery Furniture, all based in Houston.

Last week Astros owner Drayton McLane said four companies remained interested. But, he said the club had narrowed its focus to two companies, whose names he would not reveal.

The new HP officially launched Tuesday, with the merged companies to keep the HP name and headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif.

I guess it could be the Landry's Fish Bowl, the Gallery Recliner Field...ugh. They could call it Hideous Sectional Park or Overpriced Shrimp Field!

It only gets worse...

:)

there's like 3700 of us here right. so lets see, about 3 million a year for naming rights, that's a mere 800 a year from each of us and we can have our very own clutchcity.net field or just clutch city field if that would be better. i think the admins should step up and give particularly large and generous donations of 10000 each. maybe we could have jeff's scoreboard and clutch's foul pole or something for the generous donors.

come on, who's with me.

And, of course, every time a home run is hit, the A-Train would start up...

bring it!

I would be proud and honored to watch my favorite team play at Dr. Scholl's Odor Eater Field. Seriously, though, if Mattress Mac wins out (and we have to endure Gallery Furniture Field), Houston will be the laughingstock of the country.

If Gallery wins, maybe, just maybe they will use Mattress Mac's last name: McIngvale Field that wouldn't be too bad? would it?

Its pretty bad when the 4th largest city in the world can only get a chain restraunt and a local furniture store as prospects for a sponsor on a baseball stadium!!!

C'mon there have got to be at least 3 or 4 more major companies that would love to have their names associated with the Astros.

Here is a question: Does the Enron situation have the potential to tarnish the image of the next would-be suitor????

Hey look at it this way,...if it's Gallery Field, then maybe, just maybe we all can save you money...:)

Look at the bright side. If Gallery Furniture gets naming rights for Astros Field, then we won't have to worry about "Gallery Furniture Arena"

Again, I say who the **** cares??? Nothing will be worse than having the name of a company that screwed its employees out of a million dollars. Why is it better to have an insurnace company, an airline, a computer company, a gas company, or a freakin' office supply store as the name rather than a self-made, homegrown millionaire?

I hope they call it Mattress Mac Field just to piss all of you off for getting upset over such a stupid thing to begin with.

It doesn't really look like there are that many people pissed off or upset here, RM95. Most are just making jokes.

Well stadium names do add to the perception of the city.

A lot of people outside of Houston bash it for being just a dump with a lot of strip centers.

Naming your stadium after a furniture company doesn't help change that perception...

Houston's already got a bad perception from the rest of the country. I don't understand how naming it Conoco Field will make any difference in the national perspective...do you really think people in Fargo, North Dakota, really give a flying **** what the Astros have named their field??

I would personally be more proud to have it named after a self-made, hometown millionaire.

Hell, I'd be happy if they called it Tampax Field just to piss some of you off.

One person in particular seems really upset by the whole thing. Kind of ironic.

Let's recap shall we:

It just annoys me that people shudder at the thought of Gallery Furniture buying naming rights when the entire process is stupid.

RM95: Take a pill, man. What, is it your Tampax Field time of the month or something? ;) I could care less what name it gets. Personally, I'd rather it be Ballpark at Union Station, but that ain't gonna happen.

Mac would be least offensive to me out of the bunch and probably most stable considering his roots here. It wouldn't piss me off in the slightest.

I'm chill man...;)

This issue is just a pet peeve of mine that's sprouted from this board. I think what Mac should do is buy the naming rights, but tell the Astros and the city that he wants it to be named Astros Field forever. How great would that be?
