http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/794/794164p1.html So despite rumors, I guess there are no 360 FF games in-development (well...none that they are working on currently that they want to confirm anyway). Funny thing is that I could have sworn Square-Enix already announced a FF MMORPG for 360/PC (see E3 2005 and some other events), but I guess maybe that was canceled, put on hold, is not a FF game, or it isn't coming to the 360 anymore. I don't know.
I wonder how the FF sales in Japan differ from those in the US/Europe. Japan has the greatest (per gamer) demand for RPGs but sports the fewest 360s. Must have been a factor in their decision but I would have thought there would be enough of an interest in FF in North America to lure S.E. to the BOX. Good News nonetheless.
people in America play World of Warcraft. Final Fantasy? World of Warcraft? They both suck balls. I'll offend all geeks of all systems. Fighting games and FPSs FOREVER!!!
I think they usually sell about the same in every region, around 2M-3M or so (maybe more once they go GH). There might be some risk in losing out on those sales in Japan, but they're apparently not even trying to do a multiplatform release, which would theoretically improve sales in the US while keeping sales in Japan the same. I don't know if maybe the White Engine won't work well on the 360 to make it worth it or what. They could use the Unreal Engine, but that would have to be for an unannounced FF title I suppose (there is at least one of those AFAIK).

im with you on this, games that are fun and take some skill > games that people play 12 hrs a day 7 days a week for a fake "item"
Exactly!! on top of that, doesn't world of warcraft cost $20/month to play? so what, you can find geeks who stay on the computer longer than you?! all those japanese RPGs are the same crap too. Some little anime kid's world is taken over by evil then you play this linear path so you can watch cutscenes with crappy japanese pop music singing about the universe or something. who wants to play for 100 hrs to get a crappy ending anyways? Give me Ken and Ryu anyday over this Final Fantasy crap. Also, its never FINAL Fantasy, its almost final.. Also, wouldn't your FINAL FANTASY not be playing 3d rendered anime kids on your TV? final fantasy below: <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zHlE48D3moA"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zHlE48D3moA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> vs a real game: <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iq8FDQqmEv4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iq8FDQqmEv4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
FFXII had none of that AFAIK. A lot of JRPGs don't either, at least most of the ones I like anyway. Not sure why I'm bothering to mention this though. Can't really speak for WoW or other MMOs.
I have to say I was never even interested in trying World of Warcraft, Everquest, or any other MMORPG. Seems pointless to me, especially since I'd never even dream of shelling out the money to keep an online service for ONE game. However, I am a fan of traditional RPGs. What's so wrong with enjoying a good story? Plus lots of them involve a lot of strategy, and more of them these days are employing so-called "active battle" systems of one kind or another, so they don't get stale. And it's not like FPSs don't get old. After spending the last year or so playing the heck out of Rainbow Six: Vegas, GRAW1, GRAW2, Perfect Dark Zero, Resistance, Halo 2, and Call of Duty 3, I find it VERY difficult to get myself psyched up for another FPS anytime soon, no matter how groundbreaking it's supposed to be. I couldn't care less about the Halo 3 launch. Yawn. But FF13 is big news to me, because there's been a serious shortage of good RPGs lately.
i tried playing those games once. nothing compared to whipping someone at Madden on the last play of the game and rubbing it in!
where's Gears of War on this list? nothing compares to chainsawing someone! Halo 3 is great. if you like Halo 2, you will like Halo 3. The beta is like crack. you get tons of weapons and vehicles. a group of dudes try to roll over you on the warthog, you drop a land mine in front of you on the last second and kaboom!
D'oh! Of course, I've played through Gears many, many times. Don't know how I forgot it. But yeah... seriously... FPS overload. I don't think I'll care about FPSs again for another year. It wouldn't matter to me if the greatest shooter ever invented came out tomorrow... I can only play one type of game for so long before I need a break. So irritating that seemingly 80% of the great games in the last year have been shooters. How about a little more variety? That's why I'm looking forward to the '08 sports titles so much. Sounds like Madden and Fifa will finally be finding their legs for real this year for next gen systems (Madden 07 = Crap, Fifa 07 = Eh, Tiger Woods 07 = Not enough courses). And of course, NBA2K will be spectacular as always.
you know actually i do like certain 'role playing games'. Marvel Alliance was great ( i like the games where you fight then get crap, not fight to get crap), Oblivion seems cool cause it looks like an FPS. Also those Ninja Gaiden/ Devil May Cry games are cool.
You guys know what's actually cool and better then beating somebody on a touchdown play at the last minute, or hitting a three in somebodys sorry mug in a video game? Actually doing it in real life. That's pretty damn cool. Try it.
oh and FPS. How about instead pretending to shoot people, how about we actually try jacking people up with guns. That's kinda fun too. Personally, I like stabbing people with a rusty, dull knife. I think it hurts them more

I can't think of a Final Fantasy game ever being announced for the 360 in the first place (though now that you mention the MMO RC, that does sound familiar) so this isn't exactly a change of any sort. Besides, SE is a Japanese company and very focused on that market. The 360 sells like crap there (not that the PS3 is much better at this point) so it wouldn't exactly be a priority for them. I don't think American performance has ever really been a prime motivator for anything they do. What will be interesting is if current trends stay the same what will happen say 3 or 4 years from now. I wonder just how 'blank' that page will stay.
