From GeorgeWBush.com: "HBO recently aired a documentary titled Nine Innings from Ground Zero that tells the story of the 2001 World Series in New York. The series helped to bring back hope and optimism to the people of America following September 11. Through interviews with players, fans, families, and even the President, the film recalls a difficult time that we came through together." http://www.georgewbush.com/NineInnings/ As we just pass the 3 year anniversary of 9/11, watching the clip of W throwing out the pitch during game 3 of the 2001 world series was a great reminder of his leadership as he directs us in the war on terror. I highly recommend watching the video in the link provided.
while it doesn't make me think of his leadership, it was pretty damn awesome when he just strolled out to the mound and threw a perfect strike on that first pitch. that had to be the most pressure-filled first pitch ever and it was perfect.
I've seen parts of it on HBO. My personal opinion is that it is a little over-the-top. That is to say, if your a Yankees fan, it may be cool, but if you're not, it is harder to make the connection (especially considering good ole Geroge's reaction to the Tampa Bay game delays).
Is it really that surprising. Here's a guy who says that he doesn't mind that Bush may have not met his requirements in the National Guard, but the fact that he can throw a good pitch makes him a leader. Unfortunately, there seem to be a whole lot more people who buy into this logic. Who buy into the fact that because the guy was president when were attacked makes him worthy of re-election.
baseball isn't really my thing, although I do think the Yankees are the equivalent of the US if you make an analogy. you can decide how that works as you want. as far as images, I totally agree. When Bush threw that pitch, you knew we were going to be okay. There is something absolutely extraordinary about a white person throwing a ballistic with pinpoint accuracy at catcher. His arm symbolizes his strength, his aim symbolizes his determination. Therefore, he must be the best thing ever, as a good arm must be had to write stuff and that stuff he writes must be good stuff too because it comes from his arm and thus we must have a great government because rules and laws and declarations and stuff come from writing. And having good vision and coordination is important, because he needs that to get around, and that symbolizes our ability to do what we want with pinpoint accuracy, that means that if we do something, we'll get it done and not stray from its path. that comes from his vision and coordination. From that pitch, you knew that he would do everything he could to fight terror. Because that pitch showed that he really, truly, cared. When we saw him in a fighter pilot suit, I dropped my hatred and though, "gee, he's really fighting for us" so I said, screw it, I'll support this war. And when I saw him posing in front of a bunch of redwoods, I forgave his environmental policy, because when you go out to smile in front of a bunch of tree, you know he cares. I'm also glad that he wears blue alot, because blue is my favorite color. You can trust me to know a thing about America and patriotism. You can see it right on the bumper sticker for my Hummer. It says "I love America", see? I'm quite an American, very patriotic, I am. In fact I'm better than all the other Americans, in fact I don't see many Americans with bumper stickers, they are probably dirty communist immigrant leeches that hate america. They don't even drive American cars! SO don't argue with me, unless you drive American and have a bumpersticker or flag on your car, otherwise you're unpatriotic.
That baseball series was something to watch. I'm a sports nut, and the World Series made the world seem real again, somehow. Hope HBO releases the DVD soon.
I watched Nine Innings. It is a great documentary that illustrates how we all came together in the weeks after 9/11. It should also remind all Americans how we had the world's support after 9/11...even the Paris newspaper LeMonde (my God....the b*stard French) claimed "We Are All Americans" in it's headline on 9/12. The documentary should also remind all Americans what George W. Bush pissed away by invading and occupying Iraq...the goodwill and support of 90% of the free world. We are truly on our own now, all because of poor decision making by our President. Thanks, George W. Bush.
I understand what you're saying but I disagree. The US is the best country in the world (both financially and for our freedoms). People are jealous of the US, as you can tell on this board even American citizens are jealous of each other because this person makes more money. Much like people are jealous of the Yankees in baseball (the richest most succesfuil team). After 9/11 many people (even those of us who hate the Yankees) hoped the Yankees would win the series to show the world how the best city on earth can overcome. But you know what a strange thing happened to both the US and the Yankees. People went back to their old feelings. Other countries went back to the jealousy of the US and many fans of baseball returned to hating the Yankees. You can blame it on Iraq, and I agree it may have sped up the process. But in the end if you're the best a lot of people are going to be jealous. To be honest with you if we had 90% of the world behind us that would be great but that is not reality. So being the best always means there are going to be people trying to bring you down. That's not a bad thing, it is reality.
I'm sorry, but I find that rather simplistic to frame it in a "like/dislike" context (this includes the presumtion initiated by RMT). For the most part, the majority of the world liked America before 9/11, and they still liked America after 9/11 and years after. However, the part that they liked was our culture, very few have ever been fans of our government. After 9/11, the world was sympathetic to our people, to the damage that was caused to our livelihood, but they were not to our government. Once the humanitarian side burned out and our government took over the big picture, the rest of the world saw that despite 9/11, we hadn't changed. I'm going to disagree that its simply jealousy, as some want us to believe, because we ourselves can respect those who are more fortunate than us if they can remain classy with integrity. What the world dislikes about our government (and this stretches way before our administration) is the hypocracy, namely when we say we are the bastion of democracy, but our foreign policy is not democratic at all, nor is our system if you truly study it (and many countries have a better idea of how our system runs than we do ala objective vs subjective). It's just like real life, Just because someone is rich and fortunate does not mean that you won't like them, in fact, if they are genuinely good people, many will listen to them. However, if you are rich and you're a prick, even if the ideas you expound are gold, no ones going to listen to you.
Cap'n! Red Alert! What is it Scotty? It's the sarcasm meter, sir. She can't take much more... I need more power!
