well, i got put on the night shift at the lumberyard i work at. i now have to work four 9.5 hour nights and one 4 hour day each week. it's totally screwing up my sleeping habits. have any of you ever done nights? if so, do you get used to it, or is it always a pain in the ass?

I did it last summer at a can factory. There are some definite benefits. It is quite a bit cooler outside. The main boss isn't likely to be around. In my situation it seemed to be a lot more relaxed. Anyway, I adjusted by staying up as late as possible the Sunday before I started and slept all day monday and went to work Monday night. After that, it was pretty easy.

I did nights and graveyard shifts at a chemical plant on the Ship Channel during summers in between college semesters. It definitely screws you up. Days all the way for me.

    Night shifts suck.

Yep, you don't have the main bosses around, for the most part, so it's a more relaxed atmosphere; but I remember my night shifts in the Navy and remember the weird sleep cycles, how the rest of the world outside is still making noise while you need rest, and how I lost too much weight (I'm already thin) because my eating habits were also thrown off.

    Night shift? Thumbs down.

We had a nightshift for a while, but they've since gotten rid of it. It was alright but it really screwed up my sleep patterns. I'm a really light sleeper, so I usually only got about 4 hours when I worked nights.

I've never done shift work, but I HATED when my dad worked graveyards. I couldn't have any friends over because the slightest noise woke my dad up, then he'd either be walking around the house in his underwear scratching his balls or sitting on the couch in his underwear eating peach cobbler straight out of the pan......

....ya know...I just had about 20 questions from my childhood answered...

I am working a day shift right now. I make A LOT more money on the night shift via tips, but my friends work the day shift with me and the only other person I work with at night is a total biotch.

I prefer neither. I hate getting up in the morning and I hate staying late at work. I like the afternoon shift, which starts at 10:30 and ends at 6:30. My work has that but its only for security/maintenance personnel.

Those sound like good hours. Not too early, not too late.

I don't really care when I sleep, so night shift would probably be better... usually less work and more relaxed... the only problem is when you wanted to do something fun that night and you had to work. For that reason alone, days are better.

We have three shifts at the motel - if I was working there, here's my order of preference:

    1) 11-7 (night). No boss, the least to do, and if you wanted to do anything fun you could do it before work.

    2) 7-3 (day). The busiest, but better than...

    3) 3-11 (afternoon - the one Ferdinand picks) While these are the best hours to be awake, it would keep me from doing anything else I wanted to do. Music - rehearsals, gigs, performances, all that happens during those hours. I already lost a gig of sorts because I'm teaching a night class right now and it conflicted. :(

I buy into that totaly.. When I was in college working and studying at night till about 7 AM for 9 months on end I would have the feeling I was sick and had all kinda problems... now that I'm working and get to sleep around 10 and get to work at 7ish I'm golden..
