Not really important, other kid poll had Bush winning. But, the Nick Kids choice in 2000 was George Bush. What did he do in the past four years to make them turn on him so quickly ? I think it was the unwarranted dividend tax cut that drove them bonkers....

NEW YORK - Kid power! Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) is the winner, and the rest of the country should pay attention because the vote on Nickelodeon's Web site has correctly chosen the president of the United States in the past four elections.

Nearly 400,000 children and teens voted, and the results were released Wednesday. Kerry received 57 percent of the vote; President Bush (news - web sites) got 43 percent.

Nickelodeon has been airing information on the Nov. 2 election, plus sponsoring debates where kids could put forth their views on the environment, the war in Iraq (news - web sites) and terrorism. Some animated shows on the cable channel also have been focusing on the election.

Linda Ellerbee, who writes and hosts "Nick News," says their voting usually reflects their parents' views — but not all the time.

"Every so often you get a kid that says, `My parents are voting for X, but I'm voting for Y,'" she said. "It's amazing, the point when kids start forming their own ideas about issues."

Ellerbee said Nickelodeon has been traveling the country teaching about the election and the importance of being socially informed. Seven-year-old Anthony Viggiano of Baldwin, N.Y., won a contest for the best song lyrics about freedom of speech and performed it with rocker John Mellencamp (news).

"If we can get kids interested earlier in voting, when they can legally vote, they will," she said. "They will run for office, they will be the candidates (that) people want to vote for."

Ellerbee, who will announce the results on "U-PICK Live" Wednesday night, said many children wonder why they can't vote in the real election.

"Kids aren't dumb, they're just younger and shorter," she said. "In fact, last election, a boy came up to me and said, `We picked George Bush (news - web sites) to win, and he didn't really win. Al Gore (news - web sites) won the popular vote, so we were kinda wrong.' Quite an observation."

Back in the early 90's my kids took Nickeoldeon Magazine. There was a positively hateful piece in there about Newt Gingrich. It stuck out like a sore thumb. That Nick Kids would vote this way should come as no surprise.

Nickelodeon shows kicked some major ass back in the day! Does anybody remember that website posted that had all the shows from back then on the site?

Of course you make fun of it, but I'm not exagerating. This piece described him as hateful et cetera. It was ridiculous.

Scholastic News for kids, which has correctedly picked every president since they started the poll, has it 52-47 bush. guess this means kids who read, vote for bush, kids who watch television, vote for kerry. i guess the remaining 1% is the online vote!

So have the Washington Redskins. Be sure to watch their game vs. Green Bay. If Washington wins Bush stays, if they lose welcome Kerry.

I thought it was supposed to be determined by the outcome of the Yankees/Sox series?

Oddly, the Red Sox are playing for George Bush, instead of native son, Manny Ortiz-rooting John Kerry.

If the AL wins the series, Republicans win...if the NL wins the series, Democrats win.

This seems like contradictory statement. First she talks about how kids are just as smart as adults. But then immediately pointed out their lack of understanding about the why we go by electoral votes in this country instead of the popular vote.

Really, well it's not as consistent as the Washington one.

what do nickelodeon kids and black voters in florida have in common?

They support Kerry more than Bush and their vote doesn't count in this election. (just a joke! I hope...)

i don't know about the washington one...but the NL/AL World Series trend goes back for quite some time, as I understand it. Seems to me the Washington trend is completely irrelevant half of the time, since incumbents can only run for re-election once.

"Since 1920, the American League has won 14 championships in presidential election years, and Republicans won the White House in nine of them. That's a .640 batting average for the GOP in American League years. The only Republicans who won without an American League triumph in hand were Ronald Reagan (1980, Philadelphia defeated Kansas City) and George H. W. Bush (1988, the Dodgers beat Oakland.)

Democrats do even better if the National League wins in an election year, batting .714. The problem for the Dems has been that the National League has won only seven election-year championships since 1920 -- half as many as the American Leaguers. (Bill Clinton is the only Democrat since Harry Truman to have bucked the trend, winning in two American League years, 1992 and 1996.)"

No, it's the incumbent party so it's completely relevant. Like look at the last election, Washington lost to Tennesse. To have the prophecy hold true a Republican would have to be elected to the White House and not a Democrat. W won.

Oh well Max, when it comes down to it they're just superstitions to begin with still fun to just think about it though. :)
