"Watching them, to me, it looks like terrible basketball. I like those guys. I play a lot with them in the summer. But I just don't think playing one-on-one, the way they play, can get you through the whole season and get you into the playoffs." Let's beat the crap out of his team tonight. ------------------ Baseball is wrong, a man with four balls can't walk.
Give me a freaking break! What did Van Exel do a most of his career? And Houston beat Denver with that "terrible" basketball! You talk about talking smack, a little success is going to Denver's head. ------------------ Rocket fans UNITE to bring Pig Miller back home! WE NEED PIG! OINK! OINK! OINK!
Exel hasn't played against 24 High, yet. Watch out for that pick! Oh, and don't forget about Francis or Mobley being on the weakside, whenever we run it. The depleted air doesn't mix well with our depleted frontline. Otherwise, I'd say Denver is just going to be another very surprised team for the next 30 days, until someone figures out how to stop 24 High.
I agree with Nick. I don't like watching one-on-one basketball either. But as far as winning the Lakers played alot of one-on-one and the Bulls did to. So one-on-one can win if you have the best player in the game on your team.
I know you have already done this so I appoligize, but could you please brake down 24 high again. Also do you see the Rox using 2 shakes again when and if Cato gets healthy? ------------------
I pretty much agree with Nick on this one. ISO basketball is boring to watch and easier to stop than a system with more movement and passing. The Rox are working on that, but it's a slow process that hasn't been made any easier by injuries. Of course, I bet Van Exel won't mind tonight when the Nuggets give McDyess the ball 40 times in a "one-on-one" matchup with Thomas or Taylor tonight. That's called playing to your strengths, and its exactly what the Rockets do with Francis and Mobley. ------------------ I am Jack's utter lack of surprise. www.clutchtown.com
Well the Bulls and Lakers haven't had much problem with ISO. It may be boring to watch, but people said that the post up offense was boring and the Rockets won games with it. I don't understand, the Rockets play a post up game people say it's boring. Houston plays ISO, people say it's boring. The Rockets run and people say it's not organized. The Rockets have to run something, and Mr. Van Exel is going to realize that when the Rockets play them. The Rockets aren't all ISO, or they wouldn't have a .500 with a depleted frontcourt. ------------------ Rocket fans UNITE to bring Pig Miller back home! WE NEED PIG! OINK! OINK! OINK! He may be right, but why in the hell would you say something like that right before a pretty important game. Idiotic and I hope the Rox take it to heart. ------------------ "He was under more balls than a midget hooker."-Bobby Hill visit www.swirve.com, coming January 20th, the top 10 films of 2000! and, http://www.geocities.com/clutch34_2000 for great Rocket insight by some of your fellow BBS posters!

Van Exel is Outdated
Guys, we are not an ISO team anymore. We are more a pnr team...watch! And Hakeem better learn to play in the pnr system, or it is clear the man can't learn new tricks.
24 High is more than your average pnr. We are developing several options off of it. We appear to be spaced out in a similar manner to Utah, but we start out a little higher and more on the wing. Mobley's ISOs have nearly 90% been replaced by the pnr. The goal, just like Utah, is to get the guard to the middle at the free-throw line where he has several passing lanes, or make them pay for leaving the roller. Right now our primary pnr passing lane once we reach the middle is to pass to the weakside guard standing at the wing who then can pass to the corner, or drive. We don't have as many options worked out as Utah, but this is fundamentally the same two-man game. We are not an ISO team anymore. Maybe in the last two minutes we are, but countless other championship teams are at that time, as well. [This message has been edited by heypartner (edited January 23, 2001).]
i hate to have to ruin the nuggets fans day but ur team is not playoff caliber..can u say lottery.. U guys have played the majority of ur games versus the weak east and at home..ill eat my words if u step up but i dont see it happening and go kill van exel he just cost ur team the game tonight.. ------------------ How Sweet It Is! you see? i was just talking about this in another thread and someone got upset! right here more than one rocket fans has said the rockets do ISOs and you guys dont like it. this is what i was referring too. i knew i wasnt crazy i get no respect...no respect i tells ya! ------------------ the nuggets suck...i know, i know!
hey could you do me a favor and find a post, any post where i say the nuggets are going to make the playoffs or even have a good shot/best shot? yall assume too much. we have a chance...albeit a small one but still better than the 0% chance we were given back in novemeber. ------------------ the nuggets suck...i know, i know!
Did Van Exel say anything specifically about Cuttino's heaves? Less heaves, more team hoops. ------------------ NOTHING BUT .NET CLUTCHCITY.NET
I think we run too many plays for Cat and he takes too much time off the shot clock. But that being said, I don't mind isolation. Didn't we win two championships by isolating Dream on the left block and having the other players stand around the 3 point line waiting for double teams? No matter what, Nick Van Exel is a vicious little punk. I'd rather run iso plays for Jason Collier all day than have him on our team.
Thankyou. The more ball movement, the better. I must say that the Rockets seem to be moving the ball much better lately. Now all they have to do is hit their open shots, and drive to the basket a little more. Less jumpers, more layins. Especially for Cuttino. ------------------ "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning how to put food on their family while being put to death."
I've only had the opportunity to see the rockets once this year, the tbs game against toronto. Maybe it was just that game, but they seemed to have a nice mix of one-on-one, fast break, and moving without the ball to get open. ------------------
Here's the whole story: Denver Nuggets point guard Nick Van Exel played critic for a few minutes Monday morning after practice at the Pepsi Center. Van Exel was asked his thoughts about the Houston Rockets, the team Denver plays host to tonight (7, Fox Sports Net) in the third of four games this season between the Midwest Division rivals. Van Exel obliged with high praise for individual members of the Rockets and a low opinion of Houston's brand of basketball. "Watching them, to me, looks like terrible basketball," Van Exel said. "Playing one-on-one like they do, I don't think it will get you through a season and through the playoffs." If Van Exel is right, it's good news for Denver, which is vying for a playoff position with several teams, including Houston. The rest of what Van Exel had to say isn't such good news for Denver, particularly Van Exel. Houston has one of the premier backcourt tandems in the league with 1999-2000 co-rookie of the year winner Steve Francis and his partner, Cuttino Mobley. Francis is averaging 19 points a game and has been nearing a triple-double in every game of late. Mobley is scoring 18.6 points a game. Both can shoot from long range or drive. Van Exel is planning on an arduous evening. "You have to play good one-on-one defense," Van Exel said. "If they're going, then you can't guard them. If they're struggling, then they can be stopped. "(Francis) is so big, so quick, so explosive, especially when he takes it to the rim, that you have to make him shoot over you," he said. With 19.3 assists a game, Houston ranks 25th out of 29 teams. That is what makes the Rockets so difficult to watch, in Van Exel's opinion. ... It starts tonight against Francis and Mobley. Houston has no depth in the post, where Hakeem Olajuwon is on the injured list and contemplating asking the team to release him. Because of various ailments to its big men, Houston's success is almost entirely dependent upon its guards. "Their guard play, their backcourt, is terrific with Francis and Mobley," Issel said. "They've got a lot of people who can shoot the ball. "With Olajuwon out and some of their bigger people, they don't depend on going inside much. "They stay on the perimeter and run pick and rolls, and we're going to have to defend that play." --------------------------------------------- Francis hardly ever does well against Van Exel.....Voshon Lenard is an experienced veteran.......and if they slightly slow them both down, we're in deep deep trouble..... ------------------
Guys, he is telling the truth. We have horrible basketball. Iso-ball is horrible, fun to watch, but in the playoffs it gets killed. The thing is, we have to play that kind of ball with the team we have. Without a major presence in the middle, it is difficult to play good solid basketball. Don't worry, once we get a big guy, Rudy will integrate the correct scheme. ------------------ A Chuck paraphrase: It was surreal! And I don't even know what that means!
