Andy Reid was an OL coach the majority of his pre HC tenure with the Eagles. IDK if he was even a play caller at Greenbay prior to being named HC. Edit: oh it’s Landry. That dude is too dumb and lazy to check his facts. Like yesterday when someone asked him if Caley was such a great OC mind why did The Hoodie go with effing DC Matt Patricia as OC and not Caley. Like he genuinely didn’t know this happened and was being smug about not knowing. Which by the way was a very valid question.
Totally fine with me. Some of the skepticism of him as OC was warranted. But he can't be pigeonholed as a "Slowik guy". He has exposure to multiple different offensive systems with multiple teams. He's very close with CJ and someone CJ clearly trusts and has seen CJ grow as a player. That's valuable to have. Assuming he will adapt to Caley's system (no reason to believe he won't), there's no reason at all to get rid of him.
He can be pigeonholed as someone that let a QB regress though. The excuses made for him but not Slowik are a little weird. The entire offensive staff and players were not good.
Yes, but I'm guessing Democo has an idea of where the blame for that offensive and QB regression should lie. You can trace back a vast majority of the regression, including CJ's, to the offensive line and play calling. Could Jerrod have done a better job of coaching CJ through that? I'm sure. I mean, no coach is a perfect coach. But those issues aren't solved simply by a QB coach doing a better job.
I love the hire. Of course, we won't know if it's a *good* hire for several months. But Caley's resume floated my boat: - he's a former TE coach, a position that has to function in both blocking as well as receiving, and those coaches have traditionally had a firm grasp of the offense as a whole. Andy Reid was a TE coach! Seam McVay was a TE coach! Ben Johnson was a TE coach! - he was in the building with Caserio for several years so some of that uncertainty - personality, work ethic, communication skills - Caserio should have a good feel for - he's a product of two offensive trees - McVay, obviously - but also McDaniels - and for all his faults as a HC, McDaniels has always been a hell of an OC. So I'm excited he not only has that dual experience but, by going to LA, he has demonstrated an open mind and thirst to learn and expand his offensive philosophies - McVay reportedly loves him - lastly, he was (reportedly) offered $6M to be the Pats' OC, and he turned it down. He chose the Texans over the Jets this hiring cycle. At the very least, we can surmise he's not dumb.
I would've preferred the "offensive head coach" route but I don't think Caley has "almost the exact level of experience" as Slowick. Caley has been a coach longer and even if we're not impressed with the ~6 extra years, I would argue quality over quantity. (And he still has the quantity.) Unlike Slowick, Caley has experience as a position coach. Specifically, as a tight ends coach, a position that features prominently in the blocking and passing game so that's a much different level of exposure to a system - you really have to understand it inside/out to function in it. He also comes from two different offensive systems - he did not, as Slowick did, grow up exclusively in the Shanahan world. That outside reference, at least on paper, should provide more options, ideas, schemes, etc. And not to excuse Slowick - but hiring Strausser was a giant whiff - had to be lured out of retirement and was then tasked with coaching a scheme he wasn't familiar with. If they hire a seasoned, good OL coach who understands and can teach the system Caley wants to run, Caley's job becomes significantly easier and that lack of playcalling experience will mostly evaporate, I think.
Ppl need to temper their system expectations. The man spent SEVEN YEARS learning the Josh McDaniel system and two years in the McVey. We’re very likely gonna get a hybrid of both. Heavy on the McDaniels system with highlights of McVey.
So you're telling me he has at least 9 years of experience before becoming the Texans OC. Much better than the one we just fired if you ask me.
There are some big TEs whose prospect report indicates a good balance between routes and blocking. I wonder if we might be flexible on TE and WR if we acquire a WR in FA? We just can't make the splash of last season. But I did get overly excited about a report Hunter was extended until I saw no follow up and realized it was wishful thinking.
