They probably just looked up "maverick" and went with the cowboy definition that it is a cow that wanders off from the herd. The Mavericks are called the "xiao niu dui", or, literally:"team of little cows/bulls". (There's no separate word for male or female animals of the species in Chinese.) The caption basically says, a group of red-clothed heroes whooped up on a hyper-active little cow.
does anyone else associate the cow definition with the Dallas Mavericks??? i don't. i'm thinking cowboy...which fits in well with the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers, up there.
Upon further review, I think it's his cane, used to support his emaciated right thigh. I've yet to figure out the piece of string.
