Every media person and NHL player that had to condemn that publicly laughed their asses off about it behind the scenes, esp. given that Avery was involved. Most players couldn't even hide their laughter when interviewed about it.

I don't get hockey. You get suspended for two games for making an obscene gesture but if you bust someone's teeth you just get some time in the penalty box.
Really? I thought he was mocking him for eating a popsicle.. Yes that is why it is obscene but why is the punishment for this worse than punching somebody out?
I was going to post the same thing. How you can get suspended for doing that, but if you fight with a player, you only get like 15 min of punishment.
^^^^^^^^^^^ in football you can hit as hard as you want, sending someone to the hospital. give someone the finger... your going to get fined/suspended. its called... PART OF THE GAME.
Not the same in any way. Hitting someone in flow of the game and them getting hurt is part of the game. The same thing would be after play stops and going full speed and hitting another player. THAT'D be the same thing. What your saying doesn't make sense, but I've heard it so many times to excuse fighting in Hockey. I have other thoughts on it, but I won't go into why I think fighting is apparently a o.k. in Hockey, but not Basketball, Football, or Baseball...
I was reading something about Derek Boogaard, the enforcer for the Wild, that there are all sorts of unwritten rules regarding fighting in hockey and in some ways it makes hockey a cleaner sport than football and basketball. That said it still seems odd to me that you can tolerate guys throwing down but a guy miming a blow job is a two game suspension.
I think people forget about this aspect of fights in hockey: When you're fighting in Hockey, you're fighting on ICE. Thus, if you try to break someone up from fighting, your feet are not stable, potentially setting yourself up for injury. I have heard stories of a guy who tried to break up a fight in an adult fun league hockey game. He stepped in, grabbed a guy around the shoulders, the guy moves to throw him off (not sure that he was his teammate), and the guy trying to break the fight up tears his ACL and shatters his Patella. It doesn't make it right, but like someone else said, it's a part of the game. That being said, hilarious clip. Loved it that it was Sean Avery.
