What do you mean? On-field time? 40 yd time? 100 M time? 10 YD time? Vick, Moss, and Coles have to be up there.
Wasn't there something at the NFL Experience that had Santana Moss's shoes and referred to him as the fastest man in the NFL? I sorta remember something like that.
I'm pretty sure that world class track athletes dont even run it that fast. Not disagreeing that he could be the fastest. But there's no way in hell that time is legit.
I looked it up. The combine time was 4.37. Still pretty damn fast. For the record, most 40 times are BS. The fastest for a football player was Deion with a 4.29 FAT on a slow surface. So that should give you an idea about some of the reported times. Vick is seriously up there. Not THE fastest, but he's in the top ranks.
Somebody (can't remember who, nobody you'd heard of) tied Deion's time this year. But as for the "NFL's Fastest Man" contest, I'm pretty sure that competition ceased to exist a few years ago.
In the midst of Darrell Green's many many Fastest man awards, he raced olympic track star Ron Brown (who played a few years with the Rams I believe) and ran a 4.21 or very close to that. He also had the second fastest 40 time only behind Carl Lewis. And ran the 100 in a smidge over 10 secs. Thats fast! Dion was nothing compared to Green in his hayday.
I think some of the receivers/cb in the league had the potential to be a world class track star. But then they found out then can take a hit and catch a ball and decide to beef up a little more and try for the NFL instead.
Well if we go by Madden 04 ratings I believe the only players to have 99 speed are Randy Moss and Champ Bailey. Probaly not the best measurement though
Andre Johnson ran a 4.29 or something like that at Miami pro day last year. But most players to seem to clock in pretty good 40 times during their schools pro days. Andre was a sprint champion at Miami too. As far as speed goes I've heard urban legends about Deion Sanders running a 4.2 40 in the sand. I also read in ESPN magazine that Bo Jackson ran a 4.15 40 at Auburn.
Anybody that runs a 10.07 in the 100 meters against dinosaurs can smoke pretty much 99.9% of the NFL no matter what epoch they come from.
I remember a CB back in the early 90's for the Saints name Tyrone Hughes who claimed one day in practice he ran a 3.9. He put that lie to rest after Steve Young tracked him down after he picked off his pass on a Monday Night Game. As far as the fastest man in the NFL now it has to be either B. Johnson or Philip Buchannon.
I believe he actually beat Carl Lewis in the 40 during one of those "fastest whatever the hell" contests. Carl usually started out slow anyway, so him getting beaten at the 40 yard mark isn't exactly that far-fetched.
Actually more info on Darrell. Darrell officially had the "nfl's fastest man" label for about a decade. In his 18th season he lost the title of Fastest Redskin. In his 19th season he regained it with an official running of a 4.24 His 6.09 in the 60 is a record still not broken by anyone attempting to. In 91 he competed in the "Worlds fastest Athelethe" and beat Carl Lewis. His fastest official (but non NFL sanctioned) clocking was 4.17
I remember watching the Cowboys training camp on HBO last year and one of the players claimed to have run a 4.04 40. I forgot his name though.
