they need to go back to the old school helmets in the 70's. that way the players will actually tackle with their arms and body, instead of launching themselves like missiles head first. when you don't feel so protected, you're not gonna risk a neck injury by using your head to tackle.
The article said it would be optional. I suspect well see more QBs like Trent Green wearing these than any other position.
The NFL has given the option of using safer alternative helmets in the past. Most players chose not to wear them. I don't think it will be any different this time. A handful of players may choose to wear it but most will continue to wear the current ones.
I don't understand why they don't use high tech materials to make pads and helmets safer -- carbon fiber, Kevlar, etc. Plastic...2008? btw - that picture looks fake
i think 300 lb. linemen are about as fast as wideouts from the 70's that doesnt help things. meaning people are just bigger and faster these days.
as a side effect, yes. but its really dumb to have all those guys running around in little plastic hats crashing into each other. make them wear whatever offers the most protection, even if they belly ache.
