I believe the supplemental draft is next month and I wonder if the Texans have any interest in any of the players available. Some argue that the supplemental draft is not worth looking into as far as talent/potential goes given the history of players such as Bernie Kosar and that Bosworth guy, however it has developed talent in the mold of guys like Cris Carter and Rob Moore. The number one guy mentioned this year is Ahmad Brooks, an immensley talented yet troubled middle linebacker who fell out of favor in Virginia Tech. He's been compared to Ray Lewis, Lavar Aarington and have been considered a top 10 pick (some a top 5)a year ago before before his fiasco in college. He ended up gaining weight, ballooning up to nearly 300lbs and had knee problems and ended up getting kicked out Virginia Tech. for what I believe are drug related problems?? Since then he has sincerely apologized to his former coach and team who ended up letting him use Virginia Tech as a place where he could do his workouts in front of NFL coaches and scouts later this month. His former coach (the same guy who kicked him off the team!) also said he would answer any questions coaches may have about Brooks. He has been on a strict workout regimen, the same that Mike Williams (Detroit) was on before he got drafted. He's close to his original playing weight of 250lbs again. The instructor even mentioned in an article that if he was even a couple minutes late he would be banished from this training facility. The guy has never been late and as a matter of fact have been found sleeping on the couch 15 minutes early before his day of training would begin. This guy is a son of a former NFL player and seems like he sincerely wants to right his wrongs. Personally I believe he was just around bad influence. I know some people are hung up on how Hollings was a bust or how Milford Brown (wasn't he a supplemental pick?) didn't pan out, but neither was as talented as Brooks or ever slated to go in the top 10 much less the top 25. (Actually I don't really know which rounds scouts valued each of these players, I just don't think they ever were rated that high). In any case unless for sure we think we're gonna bomb this year and end up picking high again, which I seriously doubt, I hope the Texans look into this guy. They need a middle linebacker. There were even rumors how they would trade greenwood for a running back (bennet?) here's a short film on what he did in one gameAhmad Brooks I have some questions as well. From what I've heard about Dwayne Jarret, the WR from USC, isn't he involved in some legal dispute with the NCAA about free rent? Could that jeapordize his ability to play this year? Could he end up signing up for the supplemental draft this year if that was the case???
All you have to do is just look what Denver did/did not do in their past history regarding the supplemental draft... I'm pretty sure our involvement/lack of involvement will follow the same patterns. We are the Houston Broncos... it was no coincidence that our uniforms were designed so similarly.
from what little i know, brooks is a good talent. fast, agile, and strong...but as it was said throughout the nfl draft, alot of teams do not want to take a chance w/ any kind of head case. personally i would take the risk with brooks......with good coaching we could have 1 deadly side of the defense with brooks and mario......but again we are talking about potential.
i think it's gonna cost us #2 atleast to get him.....thats alot to give up.....but we did it w/ hollings, so y not w/ this guy....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_Draft In late summer, the NFL also holds a Supplemental Draft to accommodate players who did not enter the regular draft because they thought they still had academic eligibility to play college football. The supplemental draft maintains the same team order from the regular draft, with the team with the worst record in the previous season picking first. However, in the supplemental draft, a team is not required to use any picks. Instead, if a team wants a player in the supplemental draft, they submit a "bid" to the Commissioner with the round they would pick that player.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/9447397 Players that have the best chance to be drafted in the Supplemental Draft. Ahmad Brooks, LB, Virginia: A national defensive player of the year coming out of high school, Brooks had an outstanding 2004 season for the Cavaliers in 2004, but got hurt last year. Brooks is scheduled to hold a workout for pro scouts at noon on June 22 at the University of Virginia. Cavaliers head coach Al Groh, along with Brooks' position coach and trainer, will be on hand to talk to the NFL personnel guys before the workout. Brooks has been training in Atlanta with Chip Smith. As of June 7, his weight was 264 -- he has a target weight of 265 for the workout -- and ran a 4.52 in the 40-yard dash, according to his agent. Brooks, who played linebacker in college but might project as a Julius Peppers-type defensive end in the pros, missed six games with a right knee injury last year. He will visit Dr. James Andrews on June 12 for the knee to be examined and that report will be made available to all NFL teams. Brooks' father, Perry Brooks, was a defensive tackle whom New England drafted in Round 7 in 1976. He never played for New England but played 92 games for Washington. Jason Berryman, DE, Iowa State: At about 240 pounds, he's probably a linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. There were 17 teams at his workout, including John Dorsey (GB), Scott McCloughan (SF) and Kent McCloughan (Scott's father) from the Raiders. That's a large contingent. He worked out indoors on what was considered a slow track. Dorsey conducted the drills, which lasted 45 minutes, and Berryman did a good job. Berryman (6-0¾, 235) was clocked at 4.67 in the 40 (1.61 after 10; 2.71 after 20), 4.39 in the short shuttle, and 7.33 in the three-cone drill. He also had a 9-foot-11 broad jump, a 32-inch vertical jump and 17 lifts. David Dixon, LB: Dixon is from Galveston, Texas, and last played at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas in 2004. Ahmad Hall, FB, Texas: Hall served in the Marines and wasn't eligible for the regular draft. He worked out at Texas' Pro Day on March 22 and was measured at 5-10¾, 232 pounds. He ran his 40s in 4.53 and 4.55 and also had a 35-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-9 long jump, 4.20 short shuttle, 7.21 three-cone drill and 24 bench presses.
I my opinion the Texans will put in a bid for Brooks, but no earlier than the 4th round. I think Brooks will fall in somewhere between the late 2nd and late 3rd rounds though.
Ahmad Brooks was measured at 6-foot-3, 260 pounds during his recent workout. Here's some more mesureables for Brooks during the workout: He ran three times, timed at 4.68, 4.75 and 4.74 in the 40, with 10-yard splits of 1.53, 1.58 and 1.58 and 20-yard splits of 2.73, 2.75 and 2.75. His arm span measured 33½ inches and his hands measured 9½. He had a 32-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-8 long jump, a 4.43 short shuttle, an 11.84 long shuttle, a 7.43 three-cone drill and 19 benches. The conditions were not really good, just average. NFL.COM>Supplemental draft: Ahmad Brooks Some teams would like to use him as a defensive end. Miami and San Francisco seem to be the ones who are serious about getting this guy. Just curious as to how they compare to Mario William's numbers and if we could have drafted Bush and pick up Ahmad in the supplemental as our DE. I read that this guy was going to be picked number 3 after Mario Williams and Bush if he had applied for the draft early.
When is the supplemental draft? i haven't heard anything new about this at all, I'm very interested in finding out more about this.
PLEASE no more DRAFTS!! I think the Texans should definitely take a look at Brooks, I would give up a 3rd Rounder for him easily. From a skill standpoint, the kid has all the tools to be a great linebacker, we'll see if he can keep his head on straight though.
I think I read where it is July 13 which, of course, is the day after July 12 when we are destined to find out that we got nothing else in the Gay-Battier affair.
Brooks goes to the Bengels in the third round. Bengels becoming NFL version of the Portland Trailblazers. Outside the Line on ESPN had a story on how many of there draft picks have had off the field problems. Brooks was the only one selected in the draft. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2518193
Although the guy has his fair share of problems in the past, I do think he is steal for a 3rd round pick. I mean after all we did spend some 3rd round picks in Dave Ragone (who we gave up for free) and Vernand Morency who has been sitting on the sideline. Brooks IMO was definitely worth a 3rd based on his potential and could have given us some depth at the LB position.
