Looks like former A&M linebacker Dat Nguyen is retiring due to injury. I didn't realize he had turned into such a good pro, then again, I don't follow the Cowgirls. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2307171
I liked him a lot and thought he was really underrated. He did so many things for the Cowboys D (one of the most important, if not the most important pieces on the D IMO). He was one of those non-stop hustle guys with a ton of heart. I remember when Parcells first came to Dallas, and seemed like he didn't originally wanting to use Dat since he was shorter than LBs that Parcells like to use, but Dat proved him wrong. I'll certainly miss watching him play if he must retire.
WOW. That's soon. I liked him, too. I mean, not that way, but I really liked seeing his intensity and love for the game, even if he was a hated cowboy, from his days at A&M.
I may have a slight UT bias, but I sure liked Dat Nguyen. Hell of a player. He wasn't exactly a star, but that didn't stop me from putting him into Topps and Topps Total every year.
absolutely loved him. from a hustle standpoint, he made use of every bit of talent he had. he was also a really warm person. did a ton for the vietnamese community. i had the pleasure of MC-ing for him at a few events. just a great guy.
I hate the cowboys and I'm lukewarm to the Aggies, but how can anyone not like a guy like Dat Nguyen. People thought he was too small to play college LB. Wrong. Too small to play NFL LB. Wrong again. I remember watching him play at A&M. He was literally in on every single tackle. Always around the ball. Always. It's a shame to see him retire. Can you imagine his heart in a guy like Terrell Owens? Randy Moss?
Yeah, I don't even care that it hurts the cowboys, I'm just sad to see him not have a chance to go out on his own terms.
Hope he has better things going for him, he was fun to watch when he was in A&M.. Dat Nguyen vs Ricky Williams.. that was cool.
I'm not an A&M or a Cowboy fan, but I've always liked Dat. It was fun to watch him play. Good luck in the next phase, Dat.
I heard about this during the season. Hasn't he had some nagging injuries? He shut up all the naysayers that said he ws too small to play in the NFL.
wasn't he born in a refugee camp? edit: Yes http://www.maxwellfootballclub.org/content/awards/bednarik/1998/bio_nguyen.htm
I dislike the Aggies and cannot stand the Cowboys, but I have nothing but the utmost respect for Dat Nguyen and everything he accomplished during his college and pro football career. To me, he single-handedly kept the Cowboys D together during the lean years. I really hope CBS or Fox hires him as a color analyst for their pro football coverage. I think he would excel in such a position.
Sad news- He was a tribute to hustle players everywhere. I heard him on a few interviews and he was always extremely respectful and came off as a super nice guy. His neck injury must be pretty bad for him to retire. I wish him the best, but I'm sure he will do fantastic regardless.
Got a chance to see Dat play in the '98 UT-A&M game. The guy was all over the field, and just had a nose for the football. I remember hearing his named called over and over again. Even though he's only 5'9 he proved to everyone that he could play at the next level. He's probably one of my favorite Aggie players.
I hate the Cowboys with a passion but I was always a Dat Nguyen fan. He gave hope to all of those players who constantly had to hear "You're too short or too small" or whatever to play this game. I'm hoping as well that he gets a color commentary job.
