Chris Gatling is a 6-10, 230 4/5 player for CLEV is trying to deal. With 17 players and 4-5 centers on their roster Lucas will be trying to make a deal to improve his team.

Yes, a lot of us would like Mihm and I hope we can make that happen still, but this thread asks would you consider Chris Gatling as a back-up 5? Gatling has played both 4/5 in his vagabond days in the NBA, but I remember him w/DAL really doing some damage. Hell, last year he burned SAC for 38 pts in a game.

He's a decent back-up for can play some big minutes in the right situation. He's got a nice shot. Here's his stats, sorry they didn't transfer better.

I like Gatling. He does a lot of things this team could use... he likes to post inside, can bang, has nice post moves, and overall is an explosive offensive player. He can play the 5 or the 4, and is a decent rebounder/defender. Not great, but not a huge liability either. However, I have heard some reports that have said he often complained in Cleveland and Orlando about wanting more touches, to be more involved, to get more minutes, etc... I'm not sure if this is correct, but if it is, I wouldn't want us to sign him unless Rudy has a long talk with him beforehand and feels confident that Gatling will not be a chemistry problem.

I don't watch him much, but from what I here, here's what he offers on offense:

    He goes left.

Another question, how about Otis Thorpe signed to a minimal contract to back Cato up?

Gatling, I don't know. I think he really is too small. If we were going for someone small (height-wise), then I'd rather trade for Jahidi White, which I think will happen once his BYC status is gone.

    Cat,

Agree. That may be one of the reasons he's moved around so much! However, if he can adapt to a 7th, 8th, or 9yh man role he'd be a nice change of pace from Cato.

    Sane,

Gat is not huge, but he has fairly long arms and a sinnuey (sp) kind of strength. He works hard on the boards also.

    Sane,

I heard OT and RT didn't part on the best terms (other thread couple of weeks back). I'm not sure how much OT has left...the little I saw him last year he didn't do much.

Jahidi is still a strong possibility and I have been an advocate for making a deal. I live close to DC and got to see JW play a little more last year...really like what he brings...just wish he was a couple inches taller.

I like what Gattling could bring to this team. He could be an ideal sub at the 5 and possibly as a starter if Cato really sucks it up.

But I would be concerned about the chemistry, as Cat brought up.

Also, what does his contract look like?

Ok, I'd understand Thorpe is over the Hill, but about Gatling, he's gonna think he's gonna get more touches on such a "young team".

I dunno if our C opsition can have ANY touches with our starting line-up, right?

That's why I thikn a Cato/White combo would be great, they'd have to concentrate on D/rebounding cause they know they're not getting the ball.

But, I'e said this before, and again, if we don't let Cato start for a good portion of the sesaon, then we're practically shooting him in the leg. We've got to give him a real chance to prove what he's got, so if he doesn't, he'll have seen it for himself, and if he does, then jackpot and 5th seed in the West.

Haven't Cleveland made it obvious they're gonna keep Mihm?

They've just started working on converting him into a 4, so that when Hill retires in a couple of years, he's their starter alongside Desagana Diop?

LOL, Twin Towers, part 3. After Hakeem's, then Robinson's, as soon as Duncan leaves in two years and Robinson retires, there's another one.

Isn't that against the rules to have that in the East? lol

Anyways, I don't see them giving Mihm up for anything, cause they know/hope he will turn into a piece of the franchise with Diop and Andre Miller.

Gatling's an FA, unrenounced value of roughly 8.5million I think?

He made between 5.5 and 6 million last year. I doubt he'd settle for a million or two.

we don't need gatling! we just need to get cato off his (__(__) - whether through threats or hypnosis or whatever, your choice - and play some ball damn it! i think we should hold off on the current 5 situation. it's not like we're making a finals run THIS season. play it out for a month or two, see what he does. if he proves himself to be effective, then obviously this puts us in great shape. if not, i'm sure we can work SOMETHING out early in the season? yes, no, maybe?

I'd definitely love to have Gatling on the team, as long as he isn't worried about touches. We have enough scorers as it is now. He is a lot like Othella (or I guess that should be Othella is a lot like him) only a better passer. He would definitely be a nice addition. If Thorpe could patch things up with Rudy he would be a nice addition to the team. How old is Thorpe though? And he has been injury prone himself. He would still be a cheap, and less risky chance that could pay dividends.

I watched Gatling for a year or two while he was with Mavs. He is very active and can score...but there's something about him that doesn't wear well with teams. And that's why someone with his numbers has moved around so much; it's no accident.

He doesn't know when not to shoot, and was not well liked by teammates. Would much prefer Harrington if we had to choose between the two.

This team needs to find out EARLY whether Cato gives a s*** and make moves accordingly.

Thorpe just turned 39 earlier this month...I would much rather see a guy like Othella or OT on the Rockets than Gatling. Othella and OT are both blue-collar players that don't score that much, but pull down a lot of boards. Gatling is more of an instant offense off the bench guy. Gatling is probably considered a better player than Othella or OT, but the Rockets don't really need any more offense. Francis, Mobley, Rice, MoT provide plenty of that already. Also the chemistry issue, Othella and OT would demand few touches and are both classy guys on and off the court. Like several have mentioned Gatling seems to have a bit of an attitude and demands more touches. Also I remember one of the 2 games against the Cavs last year, Gatling had a real long goatee that was combed strangely with a rubber-band or something wrapped around it...what was up with that?

Ooops, that should have read that Gatling is a better DEFENDER then Othella, not passer. Those are great points SF3, though I didn't realize Otis was that old, man. Gatling definitely would be more of a problem because he is more of a scorer then Otis and Othella. But remember, Othella would need less touches, but once he touches the ball it ain't coming back. I was hoping the Rocks could have found a way to pry Othella from New York since New York would seem to have less use for him with Kurt Thomas and Marcus Camby. Hopefully Houston can get that big man.

Gatling has played for more teams than Chucky Brown and Sam Cassell combined (or at least it seems). I remember hearing something about him griping and complaining about playing for the Cavs. Maybe he was getting tired of moving from team to team every season. I think he's got a bad attitude. We should be okay if we can get Jahidi. We wouldn't even be having this discussion if Cato played anywhere close to his potential.
