Any new news on the 18th pick? Has Orlando decided to pick the option on the 18th pick or not. ------------------
bskball.com is reporting that word has it that Orlando has to give the pick to Houston and doesnt have the option of keeping it, for what its worth. I never understood why it is so difficult to get EXACT details regarding deals involving picks. ------------------ I hope, when they die, cartoon characters have to answer for their sins.
Most teams hold off as long as possible in case other deals present themselves. No sense for them to give up a pick until they absolutely have to. Also, they are still competeing with other teams so they don't want to give an advantage to another team. ------------------ So, I took the million dollars and bought a steam shovel...
Isn't the BskBall.com site run by a Magic fan? ------------------ Raef to Rocks '01-'02 [This message has been edited by GATER (edited May 08, 2001).]
I meant EXACT details on who has the option. Bskball.com is making it sound as if Orlando no longer even has the option of holding it, but must give it up now. ------------------ I hope, when they die, cartoon characters have to answer for their sins.
I thought it was Orlando's option to take it from the Suns but if they do they have to give it to us. So the question is would they rather give us 18 or a somewhat worse pick next year or whenever they end up having to accept the suns pick. ------------------
If Orlando does not take the option on the 18th pick, will the Suns get the 18th pick this year? ------------------
First of all, in a league where everything appears to be monitored down almost to the sub-atomic level, someone in the league office messed up big-time when it came to the way the picks in the upcoming draft would be allocated. When the draft order was initially set by the league, it was announced that New York's pick would go to Phoenix, on to the Magic and then — finally — to the Rockets. So last week it was announced that the Rockets had received that No. 18 pick from Orlando, a residual move from the three-team trade that got them Steve Francis from Vancouver. But, as Roseanna Rosanadana was fond of saying... never mind. This much is known: The Suns do have the Knicks pick. And the Magic can claim the pick. And if they do, it goes to the Rockets. But the Magic get to decide. If they do decide to claim the pick, it will go to the Rockets because it is out of the top 17. If they let the Suns keep it, the Magic can send a pick next year, and it won't be a very good one. You clear on this? Need a flowchart? The Rockets think they grasp the situation. For now, anyway. "We're just going to have to wait longer (to see if they will receive the pick),'' said Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson. "I guess the league didn't see it was (Orlando's) option to take the pick. "It's out of our hands. But they're talking about a pick from Phoenix outside of the top 17 and it's No. 18, so this would be a perfect year for us.'' One thing has not changed — the Pistons still owe the Rockets a first-round pick. But Detroit isn't likely to give it up this year since they hold just one, which happens to be in the lottery (No. 9). So the Rockets have picks Nos. 13 (their own) and 22 (which they got from Milwaukee in the deal that sent Joel Pryzbilla to the Bucks for Jason Collier). ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
Can anyone see a reason why they wouldn't give us the 18th pick? How would not claiming it, help them? They would still owe us & 2 or 3 other teams #1 picks in the next couple of years. All I can see is that it would make their repayment schedule even tighter. Any thoughts on that? Maybe, there's a trade discussion going on behind closed doors & Orlando is using it as leverage to pry Cato away from us. ------------------
I agree. Either way they are not helped. It seems as if Phoenix owes them a pick. Will Phoenix have a better pick next year for Orlando to take a keep leaving us with their pick which should be lower assuming they move closer to the top of the east? Who knows, it probably will still be around 15-20 and since Orlando seems to owe so many picks, handing it over now may be in their best interest. ------------------ I hope, when they die, cartoon characters have to answer for their sins.
Most teams have a tendency to hold off givning up draft picks until the last second possible. Everybody thinks if they have the 18 pick this year they will improve and end up with the 29 pick next year. And they would rather let us have the 29th instead of the 18th. Atlanta traded away a first rounder to the Clippers for Lorenzo Wright. At the time they had a good team and could have cost them a 20th pick. But they had to wait thinking their bound to improve. Next year is the last year of their option and they have to give up their first rounder and it probably will be 1 threw 5. Detroit's pick coming to us next year could end up being a decent pick too. ------------------
The Detroit pick owed to us does not have to be Detroits. Detroit can send the Rockets another teams pick. I believe other good teams owe Detroit some picks which they would most likely be low-first round picks which they will use to pay the Rockets. It would have been great if it had to be Detroits pick, then we would be looking at a lottery pick! My feeling on the 18th pick this year is that the Rockets will get it and use it in a package to move up in the draft. ------------------ take it one day at a time
