Listening to KPRC radio sports talk http://kprcradio.com/live.htm and Mike Newlin is a guest. He is naming his All-Time starting 5. They are: Jabbar (Walton a close second) McHale (he did not feel Karl Malone was athletic enough) Bird (Rick Barry here and Bird at PF) Jordan Magic (West and Big "O" Someone called and suggested Elvin Hayes at PF. Newlin stated "He was the most selfish player I ever saw" Newlin also said "It was painful to watch him play because he was so selfish" "He was lucky to be traded to the Bullets, where Unseld carried him to a championship" I know most of you young 'uns never saw the Big "E" play, but Newlin is 100% correct, he was a very selfish player. ------------------ "Your not a real member of CC.net unless you have 1000 posts" [This message has been edited by BobFinn* (edited August 02, 2000).] [This message has been edited by BobFinn* (edited August 03, 2000).]
Malone wasn't athletic enough? I wonder what his definition of athletic is? ------------------ Just shut up and post
Abdul-Jabbar and WALTON(?!) over Chamberlain, Russell, and Hakeem? What a well thought out list... ------------------ WE WILL WATCH THEM FALL... Next year
I liked Newlin as a player. He always hustled, diving for lose balls, and such. He had a method to his picking of this team. He based it on performance in the Clutch. He stated, as a player, you can tell when someone CONTROLS the flow of the game. Jabbar and Walton controled games. Now he did play against Wilt, and he said he didn't control the games for the Lakers, Jerry West did. As for Russell, he never played against him, so I question him leaving him off. On Dream, he said, he loves him but he wasn't in the top 5 of all-time. ------------------ "Your not a real member of CC.net unless you have 1000 posts"
"He based it on performance in the Clutch. He stated, as a player, you can tell when someone CONTROLS the flow of the game. Jabbar and Walton controled games." I thought those were the exact things that Hakeem was known for!!! ------------------ WE WILL WATCH THEM FALL... Next year
Thats Newlin's opinion, not mine anti Although I do agree with his opinion on Malone. Someone also called and asked what he thought about James Worthy being on the 50-Greatest team. He said "What a joke" "Worthy just happened to be on a good team" "He wasn't good enough to be on that(50-Greatest) team" ------------------ "Your not a real member of CC.net unless you have 1000 posts" [This message has been edited by BobFinn* (edited August 02, 2000).]

smeg, did you read my poem in LHutz's thread in the hangout? ------------------ "Your not a real member of CC.net unless you have 1000 posts"
Since I did not hear the interview, I can only speak on what I have read. Let's see Malone not athletic enough.. Hakeem did not perform in the Clutch.. ???? Big Brothers I think Pledgee Newlin needs to be Hazed. ------------------ Soon to be a Member of CCC. inc Pledgee T_Man
Well, Karl Malone was never athletic at all in terms of a run and jump athlete. It use to be well known how Malone always tried to play harder against the taller, more athletic power forwards in the game because he was neither. But if you include quickness and power into the equation, then it is no question he is very athletic. ------------------
BOb, yeah read the poem love it, now read my post in hangout about fantasy FB, i need some help with my team. ------------------ Fun Police Says: 1. Posting in appropriate forums Sucks! 2. He may not be the "jump" athlete, but there are few players in the league that ran the court as well as he did, nor could do it for 40+ minutes a game like he did. Malone is a great athlete. ------------------ Just shut up and post
I have lots of opinnions on that list by Newlin but 1 in paticular,BIRD.To me he was a great cluth performer and team player but i dont think he should be anywhere near the all-time team.In my opinion he shouldnt even be in the top 50 and i know a lot of people disagree.1 more thing wheres newlins loyalty,Hakeem #1. ------------------
so malone wasn't athletic enough but Mchale was ? ------------------ "Don't they get cable in Canada ?" Keith olbermann, after watching hakeem block terry catledge's shot 5 times.
Traj, you should be embarrased ! Moses was a center, and he wasn't in the top 5 centers of all time. We're talking about Karl. I hate him, but he is AT LEAST in the top 2 or 3 Power Forwards ever. ------------------ Kobe would be nothing without Shaq.
Must have missed the parenthetical statement after McHale's name in the first post. From "Malone wasn't athletic enough?" and on, I just assumed Moses was under consideration, although it would be difficult to imagine him ahead of guys like Russell, Chamberlin, Jabbar, and Olajuwon. I guess it usually does help to read at least the first post carefully. As for Hayes, I can't say whether or not he should be considered, but he forever helped me remember where to get a job driving a cab in the city of Houston when I was growing up. ------------------
